On the hillsides of La Voulte-sur-Rhône and the Col des Viaux

This hike will take you to the heights of La Voulte-sur-Rhône, an Ardèche village located at the intersection of three valleys: Rhône, Eyrieux and Ouvèze, with its hilltop church and castle. This route is not difficult, with an uphill section at the beginning and a downhill section at the end of the walk. The ridges offer beautiful views, particularly of the Trois Becs, the Vercors and the Rhône.
The return journey is mainly on small, quiet tarmac roads, which makes the descent easy but may discourage some hikers.

Description of the walk

Park on the D86, Quai Anatole France, on the banks of the Rhône.

(S/E) Walk along the Rhône towards the north-east for about 200 metres.

(1) Turn left at thesecond street (Rue de la Paix), then turn right to go around the town hall and climb the few steps opposite it. Turn right onto Grand Rue, then climb left onto Rue Dauphine, then right onto Rue Gamon, and arrive at the castle.

(2) Turn left towards the church, turn right and go around it, then climb up to the three-way junction a few metres before the cemetery.

(3) Turn left onto Rue du Bouchon to pass between the two cemeteries and follow this street, which climbs steadily. Pass the Ruisseau de Bouchon stream.

(4) Shortly afterwards, continue climbing through the woods along the same road until you reach the top of the hill at Route des Romarins in La Blache.

(5) Turn left onto the track and zigzag uphill to a telecommunications antenna.

(6) Leave the track and take the small path on the far left. This section is quite steep and stony, but not difficult. Further on, pass under a power line, rejoin the forest track and follow it to the left for about 100 metres until you reach a crossroads.

(7) Take the small path on the right that passes under the high-voltage line and leads to a hunters' hut.

(8) Turn left where two tracks lead in this direction; they run parallel for a few metres and then join up. Continue south-west, pass under the power line and arrive at an intersection.

(9) Turn right onto Chemin de l'Escalier, where there is a 30 km/h speed limit sign. From this point, a long stretch of tarmac begins on a small road with very little traffic. Continue along this road until you reach the end, at the crossroads, where there is a small stele on the left-hand side.

(10) Turn left (Route des Crêtes, D265a) and continue zigzagging up to Col des Viaux and the D365.

(11) Continue left towards La Voulte-sur-Rhône, 2 km. Continue for 150 metres and be careful not to miss the small path downhill, clearly visible on the left.

(12) Take this path and, after turning left, follow the fence around the La Boissine site. Cross the streams and you will come out onto a road, Chemin de Roumanie.

(13) Continue to the right and follow the road to La Voulte church, which you passed on the way there. Turn right (Montée de l'Église) and go downhill to a fork.

(14) Take the hairpin bend to the left (Rue du Bourg), continue straight ahead, cross the main road with caution, then return to the car park at Quai Anatole France (S/E).

The route is interesting, allowing you to explore the old quarter of La Voulte sur Rhône, and the promised views are indeed there (well-maintained vegetation).
There is a lot of tarmac, so wear suitable footwear for this type of terrain and leave your "mountain boots" in the cupboard for stony and/or slippery paths.
Don't miss a visit to the village of Beauchastel before or after, especially if you love old buildings.
NB: as I have GPS on Visorando, I don't use the descriptions to follow the route.
