Within the grounds of the Chartreuse du Mont-Dieu

This walk is a journey back in time.

Starting from areas of livestock farming and crop cultivation, you’ll come across monuments and information boards along the route that recount the resistance to the German invasion during the Battle of Stonne in May 1940.

You’ll journey back to the 12th century with the Chartreuse du Mont-Dieu, the forest and the estates that belonged to it, and finish the route on the Roman road that led from Reims to Trier.

Description of the walk

Parking is available near the town hall in Les Grandes-Armoises at the junction of the D30 and the D130.

(S/E) From the town hall, head towards the church and continue along theGR® 14. As you leave the village, pass a cross on your right and, after the ‘village exit’ sign and a left-hand bend, continue eastwards until you reach a cross on your right.

(1) Turn right onto a tarmac farm track until you reach the junction with a lime tree. As you cross the plateau, take a moment to admire the panoramic view of the local villages and the fields of maize, rapeseed and wheat.

(2) At the lime tree, leave theGR® and turn right, heading west, onto a grassy farm track for 1 km. Ignore the path leading off into the fields on the right; 300 metres further on, you’ll reach the road.

(3) Follow this road to the right and head down towards the village of Sy; pastures and orchards come into view as you approach the village. Ignore the paths to the right or left.

(4) In Sy, after the bend to the right, take the main road towards the church and the town hall and head northwards uphill until you reach the junction with the D30 at the monument to the 45th Tank Battalion of the Gendarmerie.

(5) Walk 40 metres to the left and turn right towards the Nociève farm, a charterhouse estate.

(6) Admire the view of the Château de la Barbière, the Chartreuse and another farmstead, the Moulineau farm, a little further on to the left. After crossing the Ruisseau de la Forge, the path comes to a crossroads.

(7) Continue straight on to the Chartreuse du Mont-Dieu (private property).

(8) Take the path on the right which leads into the woods of Mont-Dieu. The path turns left and continues eastwards.

(9) About 100 metres before the forest track, you can take a path down to the left for a few metres, which leads to the Saint-Bernard spring catchment.
Then return to the path and continue on to join theGR® 14 on the forest track, which you’ll follow to the right until you reach the power line pylons.

(10) Immediately after the power line pylons, take the small path that descends to the right to the Étang de la Barbière.

(11) Now is the time to take a slight detour to the right to La Correrie.

(12) La Correrie is another farmstead, superbly renovated, with the imposing barn opposite which served as the abbey’s grain store. Retrace your steps.

(11) Carry on to the right and walk alongside the pond on your left. Pass in front of the Château de la Barbière, which dates from 1900, then you’ll come within sight of the junction with the D30.

(13) Just before the D30, follow theGR® trail to the left, go through the gate and immediately take the path on the right after a short flight of steps; you are now on the Roman Road that linked Reims to Trier.
After 500m, turn right onto the Chemin du Persil, then head towards Les Grandes Armoises and the town hall (S/E).

Hello
The Chartreuse du Mont-Dieu was ravaged by fire on 2 November 2025. Only the walls remain.

Very nice parish-specific to Brittany walk, unfortunately the last 500 metres on the Parsley Path are very difficult to walk on, as the path is overgrown with brambles and nettles

A lovely circular route through the Pre-Ardennes ridges. The route offers plenty of variety and points of interest. Excellent route description.
The only downside: I quickly turned back on the Roman road (point 13) as the path was not well maintained.

A lovely walk, beautiful scenery,
La Chartreuse and La Correrie are lovely!!
Between points 3 and 4, we went via ‘Le Chenet’ to avoid following the tarmac road
Picnic tables near the church in SY
At point 13, it was impossible to follow the Roman road; a sign prohibiting access due to an infestation of processionary caterpillars blocked the path. A shame. So we went down via the road instead.
Thank you for this lovely route
