Knolls of Velay, La Galoche, Corbœuf ravine and Glavenas chapel

A beautiful, unmarked, cultural and romantic nature walk in the wild Auvergne, far from the crowds. Best done in May when the flowers are in bloom or from September to November, in the wild Suissesse valley. Visit the Corbœuf ravine, the Colorado of Auvergne, then walk among a dozen knolls, the small, pointed volcanoes that are specific to the Velay region. Pass through the village of Saint-Julien-du-Pinet, then on to the chapel of Glavenas, located in a small citadel built on a knoll.

Description of the walk

Please note: the normal route, a steep path along the Corboeuf ravine, has collapsed and is closed to the public (source: Rosières Town Hall). The route has been changed to bypass this area.

Park in the car park of the hamlet of La Gare, which can be reached via the D431 from Bessamorel on the N88.

(S/E) Head north-west along the wide, downhill tarmac road. You will soon reach theGR®40crossroads.

(1) Continue straight ahead, ignoring theGR®, and pass through the hamlets of Saucias and La Varenne before reaching the basalt and granite quarries.

(2) Continue on to reach the second quarry, leave the tarmac road and turn left onto the La Galoche railway line. This is an unpaved track; follow it straight ahead, following its regular curves. You will reach a crossroads at an altitude of 741 m.

(3) Turn right towards Chastel Sud-Ouest, then south. This is the detour to bypass the recently collapsed area of the Corboeuf ravine. The path becomes paved at the entrance to Chastel. Then follow the main paved road.

(4) Take the path opposite, signposted Corbœuf, to enjoy a beautiful wide-angle view as you enter a large, flat, rectangular field on the left. Walk to the end of the field, where you will find a stable cliff edge jutting out into the ravine like the bow of a ship. This is a large area, ideal for a break or a picnic.

(5) Return to the previous crossroads.

(4) Turn left onto the road. Stay on this road, ignoring the roads branching off to the right or left, to reach the hamlet of Coindet and then a crossroads.

(6) Take the road opposite. At the next four-way crossroads, turn left. At thesecond crossroads, turn left again.

(7) At the next intersection, turn right (avoid the more obvious path on the left).

(8) At the houses, turn right and follow the main road. At the crossroads with a cross, turn left and continue to the entrance to the village of Saint-Julien-du-Pinet.

(9) Continue straight ahead. Cross a road and go straight ahead to the church.

(10) Retrace your steps to the village exit.

(9) Take a path on the left and climb towards the forest. Go around Knoll d'Alibert to the west. Ignore a path coming from the right and pass the Arzalier house. You will come to a road; follow it to the left.

(11) Turn left to reach the hamlet of Le Cros de Mortessagne.

(12) Turn right and go to the end of the main street before turning left onto a path heading east. You will reach the hamlet of La Rétisse.

(13) Turn right onto the D28 and follow it until it joins theGR®40at the next crossroads.

(14) Take it on the right, following the red and white markings. Cross a road and continue straight ahead to the hamlet of Glavenas.

(15) Climb the small road that leads to the chapel (panoramic view).

(16) Retrace your steps.

(15) Take the path on the right and follow theGR® downhill (ignore a path on the left). This will take you to the hamlet of Le Prat and then back to the original crossroads.

(1) Turn left onto the original path to return to the car park at the station (S/E).

Hike combined with part of the Corboeuf ravine hike. At point 3, we stayed on the railway track and followed the ravine to Chastel, then continued along the track.
The ravines are magnificent, although there wasn't much sun, and the chapel is worth a visit. A very beautiful hike, long but easy.

I have to go on this hike with a group, and I will be sure to give you our opinion.
Thank you
Great route despite the small roads and greenways. Don't hesitate to visit the Pinard museum with its restored mill! At the start, without the Corboeuf ravine - Glavenas Chapel
It's a shame we had to do the morning section in the rain...

A pleasant and interesting hike. We went down to see the Pinard mill, where we received a very warm welcome from a gentleman who shared his passion with us. The Corbœuf ravine is worth seeing. At point 5, we continued on to another viewpoint where there are tables in the shade, an ideal place for a picnic. There is a lovely view from the Glavenas chapel.

We did it as a day hike. We made a short detour to the Pinard mill where Mr Jacques Darne, a former schoolteacher, told us the history of his estate (allow an hour, he is passionate and therefore fascinating). There is a lot of tarmac, it's true, which is best avoided in hot weather, but we are at an altitude of at least 740 metres.
No difficulty following the trail on the Visorando app. The Corbeuf ravine, the village of Saint Julien and the chapel of Glavenas are well worth a visit.
An easy hike with varied landscapes.

At point 6, we had to give up trying to find our way, as the famous crossroads were not easy to identify.
On the other hand, at the Azalier house, we followed our instincts because the directions were still unclear. In fact, you have to turn right to pass in front of the Azalier house.

I did this route on 1 January, so there weren't many people out, but I imagine it must be very busy in summer. It's a beautiful route and the Corboeuf ravine looked stunning in the sunshine (it was an exceptional day on 1 January 2022, with blue skies, bright sunshine and a temperature of 17°C). The only slight downside is that there are quite a few tarmac roads on this route, but it's still a very pleasant hike that I recommend.

Far too much tarmac, an easy route despite being classified as difficult.
We completed the route in 4 hours and 25 minutes, including stops, even though it is listed as taking 6 hours and 10 minutes. ?

Superb unmarked route. You must follow only the descriptions, which leave room for much hesitation and error.
