Description of the walk

From Millevaches, take the D36 towards Mont Audouze. Before reaching this site, turn left onto the D21 and park immediately in a car park on the right-hand side of the road.

Blue markings.

(S/E) Cross the D21 (be careful!) and take the path opposite, following the sign for "Sources de la Vienne". You will immediately find information panels in the form of an orientation table. Continue along the path that descends to the edge of the meadow.

Ignore a path on the right and you will soon come to an information board. Cross the stream that flows from the spring on the left.

(1) At the next intersection of paths, continue left, following the blue signs. The path follows the stream, then veers away from it to join a track. Follow it to the left. Further on, follow the arrow to the left to find an information panel overlooking a peat bog (another spring).

(2) Continue along the trail for a few metres, then ignore a path on the right but turn right onto the path just after it. Continue straight ahead, ignoring a path on the left, to reach a wide path.

(3) Follow it to the right and, a few metres further on, cross a footbridge on the right. Follow the path that passes near a sort of sandstone bell. Further on, a sign invites you to make a round trip to a shepherd's hut. Then continue to the left to quickly reach an information sign at the "official" IGN source. Continue along the path to reach another footbridge near a beautiful beech tree.

(4) Cross it and continue straight ahead, along the edge of the moor. You will reach a path; follow it to the left. About 150 metres further on, look out for the path that descends to the right. Take it to reach the intersection you took on the way there, near the stream.

(1) Turn left to return to the car park via the same route as on the way there (S/E).

On this route, which follows the entire Sentier de découverte des Sources de la Vienne (Vienne Springs Discovery Trail), the most obvious springs have been developed by humans to water livestock and are marked by granite markers bearing the inscription "Source de la Vienne" at the bottom. In fact, the real sources are the peat bogs (see the video at this link), as is the case for the Vézère.

At the start of the route, the markings were very clear and the path very easy to walk. What's more, the explanations were very clear and well done. However, about 2/3 of the way along, the markings became less visible and sometimes poorly placed (50 m after a junction, for example), but above all, the path was almost impassable, as it had probably not been maintained for many weeks, if not months.
There were no signs for the second source of the Vienne, which we found somewhat by chance, nor for the third source, which we didn't see. A pity, because that was the whole point of the walk!

There was very little of interest, even if the organisers did try to include a few entertaining information points.

A mistake at point 3: the stile to cross is on the right, not the left.

It's a beautiful path!
