Description of the walk

From Digne-les-Bains, take the Route de Courbons, which is very narrow and where it is sometimes difficult for vehicles to pass each other. Once you reach the village, where all the streets are dead ends, park as soon as possible. You can drive up to the small car park by the church via a very narrow and steep street.

(S/E) Walk up towards the church, taking a detour via the belfry and passing in front of the porch.

(1) Ignore the staircase leading down to the left, which you will use on the way back, and continue straight on, heading north-west.

(2) At Saint-Barnabé, ignore the path branching off to the left and head up towards La Clapière Haute.

(3) Continue to Martignon. Enjoy the magnificent views of the Massif des Trois Évêchés.

(4) Continue to Darau on the wideGRP® Grande Traversée des Préalpes trail.

(5) Pass the path on your right that descends towards Champourcin and continue climbing.

(6) At the three-way junction, keep to the right for a few metres, then ignore the path branching off to the right and continue along theGRP® to the Pied de la Bigue signpost.

(7) Turn left and climb up the Gourau ridge. The last 200 metres are very steep.

(8) Take in the 360° panoramic view, then head back down to Martignon.

(4) At the three-way junction, leave the path you came up on and continue left along theGRP®, which is well signposted, to reach the Col de Baisse des Chatières.

(9) At the pass, leave theGRP® and turn right, heading down towards the ruins as you skirt the large cultivated field, then follow the path along the bottom of the valley. Once you reach the Croix des Roches Rouges, the village is clearly visible below. You can easily reach it by continuing along the path.

(1) Return to the church, take the steps, then the street to reach the car park (S/E).

A very beautiful hike with magnificent views.

At point 9, as indicated by Lou Cigalou, walk along the field on the right and pass in front of the sheepfold to find the path that leads back to Courbons. There are no clear signs.

A fantastic hike, though on the way back – after a stony descent that’s perfectly normal for a hike rated as difficult – you’ll need to cross a field, skirting a ruined sheepfold, to rejoin a well-marked path that will take you back to the car park in Courbons. If you fancy extending the walk, you can carry on towards the Relais de l’Andran. The views are magnificent – it’s a real feast for the eyes!!

A lovely sunny day with no wind. A lovely walk with magnificent 360° views. The village of Courbons is charming.
An easy walk, with a slightly steep climb towards the summit. I highly recommend it!

A wonderful hike, exactly as described.
We recommend

the village of Courbons, which is of great historical interest. Well worth a visit, and breathtaking views throughout the hike

We did it on 30 December with a bit of snow – no problem with good walking boots
