Summit of the Eychauda via the Crête de Serre-Chevalier

A traverse through a nature reserve in the Écrins National Park, rich with wildflowers; a ridge walk and an ascent to a summit offering a vast and stunning panorama of the Écrins, the Cerces, Italy and the Queyras. These are the ingredients of this magnificent hike.
I recommend using the Visorando app for this route.

Description of the walk

Access: At the southern crossroads of Briançon (on the Route des Grandes Alpes between the petrol station and the ski lift entrance), take the D35 towards Puy-Saint-André, then on to Puy Chalvin. At this point, the road turns into a dirt track; continue to the village of Les Combes, which you will pass through, and park 1 km further on in the car park at the end of this track.

(S/E) From the car park, take the path that continues from the track, then head towards the junction at a wide bend (barrier, sign).

(1) Leave the lane, then head uphill to the left, towards the Col de la Trancoulette and Lac des Partias, until you reach the next junction.

(2) At the signpost, leave the sign for the Col de la Trancoulette on your left and turn right towards Lac des Partias. This short, more scenic detour leaves the track and rejoins it a little further on. It offers a bird’s-eye view of the Sagne Bougo valley and any cattle you might spot there (you’ll pass through two electric fences). Follow the track uphill until you come to a wooden signpost on a slope to your right.

(3) At the sign, head up the path to the right, towards the Col de la Pisse. This path climbs a grassy ridge from which you can see, on the left, the small, dried-up Lac des Partias (a pond), below the Rocher Bouchard and La Condamine. It then heads north, crosses a stream, and reaches a wide plateau known as ‘le Ravin de Mélivrin’ before climbing more steeply up a hillock.

(4) Once past this, turn left and follow the yellow marker posts. The path heads west, running alongside a line of rocks set on a grassy ridge leading to a junction at the foot of the summit of the Eychauda.

(5) At the signpost, leave the path heading towards the Col de la Pisse on your left and take the path to the right towards Serre-Chevalier. The path descends a few metres, then continues its gentle ascent along the hillside towards the Col de Serre-Chevalier.

(6) From the pass, leave the path, turn left, then head westwards, zigzagging up the grassy terraces. After a short but steep climb, you reach the Crête de Serre-Chevalier, and the slope levels out to become very gently undulating. Follow the ridge westwards.

(7) Pass the point which will be the junction for the return route, and continue along the ridge for about a hundred metres to its end, then descend to the saddle before climbing back up to the south-west, towards the Eychauda ski lift. Turn left, then right to reach, via a short north-westerly climb, the summit of the Eychauda, marked by a cairn.

(8) From the summit, head back to the saddle, then climb about a hundred metres up the Serre-Chevalier ridge.

(7) Leave the ridge and descend diagonally to the right, heading south-west, across the grassy terraces towards La Condamine. After about 300 m of descent, cross the path taken on the ascent and turn left, heading south-east towards the Grand Rochebrune. Join the outward route at the hillock.

(4) Descend along the same route, in the opposite direction, to the car park (S/E).

Notes

I’ve made a video labelling the peaks, which shows the route and, consequently, the short off-trail section.

What about this route on the IGN map?
The bypass path and the one leading to the Col de la Pisse do not appear on the IGN map, even though they are clearly present and perfectly signposted on the ground. Conversely, the path leading up from Lac des Partias no longer exists on the ground.
The Lac des Partias–Col de la Trancoulette junction has been moved and is now located at the start of the bypass trail. At the very least, a second set of markings has been added.

The climb up to the Serre Chevalier ridge, where there are fine natural steps in the grassy terraces, is quite steep. Don’t hesitate to zigzag your way up.

Regarding navigation
Although it is possible to navigate using a map and compass, I recommend using a GPS or smartphone after downloading the route track and digital map. The Visorando app is excellent for this purpose.
The broad summit can accommodate a group of walkers. There are no exposed sections.

This route passes through a protected area, which may be subject to special regulations:

-Lucie, here is the author’s reply:

On this route, the Serre Chevalier ridge marks the boundary between the Serre Chevalier ski area and the Partias ski area. This ridge is widely used by skiers in winter. In my opinion, therefore, passing through this area can be tolerated. The link is here: https://www.maregionsud.fr/fileadmin/use...
However, on the return journey, the short off-trail section which allows you to rejoin the path after leaving the ridge is part of the ski area. That said, I don’t think there’s any risk of being fined at this altitude.
What matters most is staying on the paths in the lower part of the valley.
For example, the off-trail return route from La Condamine, which allows you to complete a circular ascent, is not tolerated by the park rangers, even though it has been used by the Briançon CAF. That is why I have written this second guide, suggesting a return via the Col de la Trancoulette to avoid the off-trail section in the Partias Valley.
Alternatively, you could also consider returning via the same route you took on the way up.
Kind regards,

And meanwhile, at the neighbouring ski resort, they’re levelling and scraping away at the mountain with heavy-duty excavators, and nobody seems to have a word to say about it.

“Trails play a part in land management. They enable the public to visit the area without damaging the natural environment and help to manage visitor numbers. Off-trail activities can have an impact on ecosystems: destruction of vegetation and organic litter that protects the soil, soil compaction, erosion, exposure of roots, disturbance of wildlife, etc. It only takes a few repeated passages in the same place to trample the vegetation and create more trails!
Hikers and mountain bikers are asked to stay on the marked trails (paint markings on rocks, trees, posts, etc.)...

Thank you

Stunning views from the Col de Serre Chevalier and the Col de la Pisse, and just after that, as you descend a little, over the peaks on the Pelvoux side

As a large part of the walk is off the official trail, it’s quite difficult to find the right route; quite a bit of time is wasted trying to find your way, even though there’s no risk of getting lost, as the summit and the turning point are within sight. The final ascent and descent are difficult, despite the small elevation gain and the steep gradient.
