Serres - Praboyer Lodge

Set off in style on this revisited Tour des Baronnies. Throughout the morning, the narrow path winds along the ridges overlooking Serres, winding its way between beautiful rocks and twisted Scots pines. At Serre de la Bouisse, the view of the Baronnies and the Alpine peaks is breathtaking. Then, between the bucolic Col d'Arron and the finish, the path progresses delightfully, like a balcony, under the Montagne de l'Aup. Finally, the Praboyer lodge is located in the heart of nature.

This walk is part of a multi-day hike: The Tour of the Baronnies Provençales

Description of the walk

You can reach Serres by train or car. Park in the large car park on the banks of the Buëch.

(S) From the centre of Serres, follow the signs for Col de Saumane. Climb up to the heights of the town through the charming medieval streets, following the red and white markings of the GR® 946. Once you leave Serres, between the forest and the rocks, the splendid path overlooks the town and the Buëch Valley. Reach Col de Saumane.

(1) Continue on the GR® 946 towards Serre de la Bouisse until you reach Rocher de Jardanne.

(2) Leave the GR® and follow the yellow PR® markings on the right, which will take you along the ridge to Serre de la Bouisse. Stay alert on thefirst part, as the markings are sometimes discreet. The path along the ridge is fabulous, offering views of the various passes and ridges you will be crossing over the next few days on the Tour des Baronnies. Between the peaks of the Southern Alps and Mont Ventoux, the 360-degree panorama stretches as far as the eye can see. You will come out at Champlat.

(3) Leave the ridge and turn right into a beautiful forest and countryside setting. Arrive at the Col d'Anon and its rest area, where you will rejoin the GR®94.

(4) Follow the GR®94 trail, marked in white and red, to the left towards Montmorin. Descend gradually along a fabulous balcony path beneath the Montagne de l'Aup. Reach the Col des Praux and the GR®91 trail.

(5) Now follow the GR® 91 opposite to reach the Praboyer lodge, today's stop. (E)

Notes

Hiking in the Baronnies Provençales Regional Nature Park is best undertaken in April-May-June and September-October. In summer, it can be very hot in the Baronnies Provençales, and in winter, some paths may be impassable or snow-covered.
Note: set off with a good supply of water as most fountains are not monitored and some may have a very low flow rate in all seasons.

Thanks Maxime for the GPS track – it was really useful as there was still a bit of snow on the ridges. There were cows and calves, and a chamois that came bounding down below Bonnet Rouge. A wild and magnificent stretch!
Loads of snow at the Col d’Arron and all the way down that side, no tracks, a steep, challenging section above a ravine – a bit nerve-wracking on my own but I’m used to it… and the same on the forest track, which was barely visible – I did the whole lot using the GPS!!
The Praboyer lodge was deserted apart from a donkey, but open – phew – and I topped up my water at the tap.
I then carried on to Montmorin and then on to the Col des Pins, halfway through stage 2, to set up my 3-star camp
