The starting and finishing towns, as well as most of the stage towns, are served by a good bus network from Lisbon (Sete Rios or Oriente-Aeroporto) or from Faro. See the Rede Expressos website. It is therefore possible to adjust this hike, either by doing it in its entirety or by choosing your own starting and finishing points.
Each stage offers a choice of accommodation and restaurants. Most stages have mini-markets for supplies. For more details, see the information sheets for the different stages.
Several well-known operators offer a "travel independently" package, which includes booking accommodation and a luggage transport service from one stage to the next.
Except for a few sections where it is absent (notably during the first stage), the trail is well marked and of good quality, often on dedicated signposts, sometimes on the ground. The fishermen's trail is marked in green and blue, while the historic trail is marked in red and white (GR® of Portugal). Sometimes you will follow PR® trails: if they are not combined with a GR®, they are marked in red and yellow; if they are combined with a GR®, a yellow dash is added to the red and white markings of the latter.
The route follows sandy paths, to a greater or lesser extent from one stage to the next, which makes walking more strenuous.
The route is mostly in open terrain. Consequently, it is necessary to bring plenty of water and suitable sun protection. This hike is not recommended in summer.
The author completed the hike in two stages: the first five stages, from Porto Covo to Aljezur, in April 2024; and the last six, from Aljezur to Lagos, in April 2025.
