Description of the walk

Departure from the Chapel of Zambujeira do Mar, located on a promontory above the sea.

Blue and green markings

(S) Head south-east and go down an avenue. Ignore the alleys on the left and the beach accesses on the right. At the stop sign, turn right and cross a river. Pass a car park, ignore the first path on the right (steep shortcut) and follow the road uphill for a few dozen metres.

(1) Leave the road and turn right onto an uphill path. At the crossroads (building on the right), go straight ahead and leave a car park on the left. Continue along the path and ignore a few paths on the left. Then go down a wooden staircase.

(2) Halfway up the slope, leave the stairs (which continue towards a beach) and take the path on the left. Immediately cross a stream and climb up the other side. At the top, continue south-west on a sandy path. Ignore a path on the right, turn left and you will come to an intersection at the corner of a grove.

(3) Turn right, ignore a path on the right and head south-southeast. Further on, enter a wood.

(4) Immediately turn right, then at the three-way junction, turn left and continue through the woods.

(5) At the crossroads, turn left and after about 100 metres, turn right. Cross the woods, keeping south. Join a path and follow it to the left for about 50 metres until you reach an intersection.

(6) Turn right and leave the woods, following a stony path. Descend a steep, stony slope to the beach car park.

(7) Cross the car park, then turn right and cross a bridge over a river.

(8) Just after a bar, turn right onto the path and climb steeply.

(9) At the top, at the T-junction, turn right. Follow a narrow path alongside a fenced meadow on your left. When the fence turns left at a 90° angle, veer right and continue along a shaded path. Return to the edge of the cliff, overlooking a beach (be careful of the sheer drop), and you will come to a fork in the path.

(10) Turn left and a little further on, turn right and descend steeply. At the bottom, turn left and climb up a small valley, gently at first and then steeply. Descend slightly, cross a wet passage and climb back up. Take two successive footbridges and arrive at a viewpoint.

(11) Turn left and then make a first turn right then left with the path. Walk along a fence on your right (shaded passage).

(12) At the T-junction, turn right and walk along the greenhouses on your left. At the next junction, turn left and follow a track along the greenhouses until you reach a road.

(13) Follow it to the left and after about 800 m, at the entrance to a slight left-hand bend, find a track on the right.

(14) Take this track, continue straight ahead, ignoring all the side tracks, until you reach a junction near the sea.

(15) Turn left, ignore a path coming from the left and veer right to return to the seafront. Then turn left, heading south. After about 200 m, veer left, away from the sea, and climb.

(16) At the top, turn right. At the next intersections, keep right, return to the cliff edge and reach a three-way junction.

(17) Turn left and stay on the cliff edge for a long time.

(18) At the fork, turn right to stay as close as possible to the cliffs. Further on, at the entrance to an abandoned deck, first turn left then right onto Rua dos Pescadores and continue to a crossroads (bar-restaurant opposite).

(19) Leave the bar-restaurant on your left and go down a road. When it turns right towards a small port, continue straight ahead on the cement path. Shortly before the end of the road, turn left onto the stony path leading downhill. Cross a footbridge over a stream and climb up the steep stony path to reach a fork.

(20) Turn right and continue along a sandy path. Walk along the edge of the cliff and head south.

(21) At the fork, bear right to stay on the cliff edge. Continue south for a long time.

(22) At another fork, bear right. Further on, turn left then right and walk along a field on your left. At the three-way junction that appears shortly afterwards, bear right. Further on, turn left and stay on the edge of the cliff. You will come to a viewpoint overlooking a large beach and the mouth of a coastal river.

(23) Turn left and take a good path with the river below on your right. Enter a wood, at the T-junction, go right and stay on the edge of the wood.

(24) At the three-way junction, turn right and then quickly turn left. Descend slightly and arrive at a car park on the right.

(25) Follow the track to the left and walk along the river on your right. After about 400 m, continue along a small road. Follow this road for a long time, which winds and goes around a marsh on the left (this long stretch may seem a bit monotonous).

Blue and green + red and white markings

(26) At the stop sign, turn right and take the bridge over the river (Ribeira de Seixe).

(27) On the other side, at the "Odeceixe" bus stop, take the first right towards Odeceixe. Then turn into the first left, Rua do Rio, and you will arrive at a small square.

(28) Turn left onto Rua Nova. At the crossroads immediately ahead, take the first right, Rua do Outão, and go uphill. Climb a staircase, which leads to Rua 25 de Abril, and follow it to the right. You will arrive at the foot of the church of Odeceixe (E).

Notes

Equipment:
- Hiking boots are required.
- In order to preserve the coastal paths and the fragile natural environment they pass through, users of walking sticks are asked to fit rubber tips to the ends.
- Sun protection is essential (hiking is not recommended in the height of summer).
- Bring plenty of water.

Route and guidance:
- A significant part of the hike is on sandy paths, which makes walking more strenuous.
- We recommend following the route using the Visorando app or, failing that, a detailed map.

Resources along the way:
- No water sources identified along the route.
- Bar at (8) (opening hours random). Bar-restaurant at (19).

Accommodation and restaurants at the end of the route:

- Several restaurants in Odeceixe, particularly around the square at the bottom of the village (28).

To return home:
Those who wish to skip the next stage can take a bus to Aljezur (to continue directly to the sixth stage), Lisbon or another destination. The bus stop is located at (27), near the bridge (Odeceixe side). Bus timetables and online booking in advance (recommended): see the Rede Expressos website.
