From Aljezur to Arrifana

This sixth stage is varied. You leave Aljezur via the Camino historico and, after a steep climb, descend gently towards the mouth of the Ribeira de Aljezur. You then take the coastal path with superb panoramic views from the cliff edge. The end of the route takes you through a pleasant pine forest and then open terrain.

This walk is part of a multi-day hike: Coastal trails of the Alentejo and Algarve

Description of the walk

The starting point is at the Aljezur bus stop. The hiking sign is on the other side of the road.

Red and white markings

(S) Facing the hiking sign, turn right onto the GR®11 towards Arrifana. Take the footbridge parallel to the road bridge. On the other side, turn right towards the Centro histórico. Ignore the alleyway on the left and go up the cobbled street.

(1) At a fork, keep left and pass by the Museu Municipal. At the corner, follow the GR® to the left and climb up to the foot of a church.

(2) Go around the church on the right and, immediately, at a small square (Largo Rainha D. Leonor), go down to the left. Ignore a path coming from the right (signpost) and go straight ahead. Walk along a wood on your left and then a wetland on your right.

(3) At an intersection, keep right and stay on the GR® (ignore the red and yellow markings on the left).

(4) Further on, go through a metal gate and enter a tourist residence (pedestrians are allowed to pass through). At the crossroads that immediately follows, go straight ahead and follow a track uphill. When you reach Casa Vincentina, turn left. Follow the track uphill, ignoring the paths branching off to the left. Continue along a gentler slope on a path lined with young eucalyptus trees and then cork oaks. You will come out onto a road.

(5) At the top, at a junction (masonry), turn right into a pine forest.

(6) Follow it to the right, taking a parallel path on the right-hand side.

Blue and green markings

(7) At a small masonry structure on the left, there are two options:
- For a shorter version (12 km in total), take a path on the left and follow the red and white GR®11® markings to Arrifana.
- As shown on the map, continue straight ahead. Walk along the road for a long time and stay on the parallel path.

(8) Shortly after a "No Overtaking" sign, turn right (bus shelter). At the fork that appears shortly after, turn right again. Descend onto a gravel track lined with houses. At a T-junction, first turn right then left. Cross a housing estate. At a small triangular square, keep to the right.

(9) At the tip of the triangle, turn left onto a sandy path. Head towards a clearly visible beach and you will arrive at a car park (bar).

(10) Then follow a road to the left. When it turns left, take a stony path lined with railings on the right and you will come to a sort of point with a beautiful view of the sea.

(11) At the end of the left-hand railing, turn sharply left onto a path along the edge of the cliff. At the fork that appears shortly afterwards, follow the path on the right, closest to the cliff (be careful of the steep drop). Then take a wooden walkway.

(12) At the end, rejoin the road and follow it to the right. Ignore three decking sections on the right.

(13) At the stop sign, turn right towards Praia de Monte Clérigo and go downhill. Cross a stream and continue along the road.

(14) After a surf school, turn right and go around a car park on the right. Ignore a wooden walkway on the right and follow a cobbled lane to the right. At the end, climb several steps on the left. At a sort of landing, first turn right then left and climb more steps. Continue climbing on a track lined with railings.

(15) When the track widens, leave it and take a path on the right that runs parallel to the track and then branches off to join another track (crossroads on the left).

(16) Follow this new track to the right until it ends.

(17) Go through a wooden gate and continue along a sandy path.

(18) At a crossroads, go straight through dense vegetation. At the exit, turn right. At a fork, turn right again, closest to the cliff. Further on, you will overlook a long beach. Then cross a gully.

(19) Take a footbridge over a stream. A little further on, take two more footbridges in succession. Continue along the path to the ruins of a house.

(20) Then turn left and walk along a car park on your left. Shortly before the end of the car park, turn right onto a sandy path. At a T-junction, follow the wider path to the right. Keep heading south-east.

(21) Then turn left with the path and move away from the sea. At a triple fork (not shown on the map), take the left or middle path, which merge further on. Walk towards some houses and leave them on your left.

(22) At a fork, turn right and descend. Enter a young pine forest that offers little shade. At the first fork, turn right. At the second fork, turn left, then right at the third fork. Descend. Cross a stream and climb up a stony path (ignore a path on the left).

(23) At a crossroads (ruined house on the right), cross a track and continue on the path opposite. At the next intersection, follow a path to the right. Descend with the village of Arrifana in sight. Cross a stream and walk through a short, very shady passage.

(24) You will come to a road (water treatment plant on the left) and follow it to the right and uphill. After a left-hand bend, you will reach a crossroads in Arrifana (E).
