Gobert Trail, Roybon Hut, Fauge Valley

A very beautiful, relatively easy hike along lovely trails and paths. Part of the route, running along the magnificent Sentier Gobert, offers stunning views of this part of the Vercors, stretching from the summit of the Deux Sœurs across the high plateaus to Lans-en-Vercors. The return via the Vallon de la Fauge is very pleasant.

Description of the walk

The starting point is in the hamlet of La Conversaria, accessible from Villard-de-Lans. A large car park provides ample parking.

(S/E) Leave the car park via the north exit and immediately take a good path that climbs to the right.

(1) Leave the track and take the path on the right, which begins to climb steeply after about 200 m. You will arrive at the Sentier Gobert, the end of the ascent.

(2) Take this path on the right, which runs flat towards the south-west.

(3) Roybon Hut: continue past the hut for about a hundred metres and take a path on your left that descends through the mountain pasture and then joins the forest. The descent continues to the Bergerie de la Fauge.

(4) Ignore the path coming from the left and continue along a good track.

(5) Pass the path on your left that leads to Les Clots and continue northwards along a good track.

(6) At the junction, take the first path on the right which descends towards the Ruisseau de la Fauge and then climbs up the other side.

(7) Cross the track and continue along the path opposite, which climbs gently.

(8) Ignore the path coming from the left and continue to the Abri des Plâtres.

(9) Just before the shelter, take the path on the left and, 200 m further on, keep to the right onto the path heading north. Stay on the main path, ignoring the tracks branching off to your left. You will reach a small road.

(10) Follow it to the hamlet of La Conversaria and return to the car park (S/E).

Notes

The route begins with a very steep climb, which accounts for most of the hike’s elevation gain.
The Cabane de Roybon site offers shelter, a water source and a lovely picnic area in a most pleasant setting.
The descent towards the Bergerie de la Fauge can be muddy and slippery after rain; you’ll cross through alpine pastures, and the path cuts through fences, so please remember to put the gates back in place after you’ve passed through.
At the (6), a short detour takes you to the Cascade de la Fauge.

The route was very busy this long weekend of fine weather. We came across at least 200 walkers, hikers, trail runners, groups, etc., many of whom were heading up to the Col Vert or the Col de l’Arc. As a result, the car park quickly filled up. A very varied hike, with panoramic views and woodland. The majority of the ascent is concentrated in the first kilometre. We particularly enjoyed the detour from point 7; the GPS was essential. One to do again when it’s quieter...

Between points 7 and 9, the Visorando app was very useful because there are lots of paths and trails in the forest
(some of which seemed to have been made recently

in July, beautiful views with flowering willowherb

Hello.
A really lovely, accessible hike with stunning scenery and beautiful panoramic views.
It’s true that most of the elevation gain is in the first few kilometres.
Thanks to whoever posted this.
Serge.

A lovely coastal walk starting from point 2. It would be helpful to specify that the route simply follows the GR (which is very well signposted) from point 2, rather than referring to the Gobert trail, as this name does not appear anywhere on the ground.
