Description of the walk

Park in the Chemin des Cochettes car park in Villard-de-Lans, Rue Albert Pietri, opposite a ski lift.

(S/E) Take the Chemin des Cochettes, which runs alongside the ski lift to a junction.

(1) Take the signposted path on the left which climbs eastwards to reach the Croix des Plâtres.

(2) Continue straight ahead along an unmarked path that climbs steadily, still heading east, until you reach the Gobert path (GR®91).

(3) Turn left onto this path, following a shaded, balcony-like route to Combe Chaulange, situated in a sharp, open bend.

(4) Leave theGR®91and turn right onto a steep, straight slope of rocks and grass to reach a fork.

(5) Turn right and continue the climb along the path which crosses a small pass, then heads south and follows the lower part of the plateau along gentler, open slopes, before turning towards Roc Cornafion, following the edge of the plateau.

(6) Descend into the Combe de Pissavache down steep slopes, keeping clear of the scree until you find a path that passes above a clump of trees, turns west and leads to a tapped spring.

(7) From here, the path is clearly marked and leads to a junction near a spring.

(8) Turn right. Descend along a wooded ridge, following the path which crosses the Gobert trail (GR®91), then turn left onto a wide path which meets another cross-country path.

(9) Turn right, continue the descent past the Magdelen fountain and arrive near a barn.

(10) After a few metres, turn left onto a wide, shaded path that leads back to the Chemin des Cochettes.

(1) Turn right onto it and head down in the opposite direction to the way you came to reach the car park (S/E).

A beautiful hike among rhododendrons and flowers. The route is challenging from the moment you get out of the car. There is a stunning view from the top of the plateau, but be careful on the steep descent (tip: take the path through the grass).

The route on Thursday 10 April was still very snowy and a bit dangerous (two slips). Check the snow conditions before setting off in spring.
Otherwise magnificent, full of ibex

Winter route. No problems following the GPS track. A slight wrong turn between points 2 and 3, where on a flat stretch I veered right towards a hut. I got back on track via steep but snow-cleared slopes, which led onto the Gobert path. At point 4, there’s a signpost marked ‘Combe Cholange’. It’s steep. I had to take off my crampons and put on my snowshoes. Instead of 5, I climbed up near the rocky barrier and reached a sort of pass, the end of the “plateau” mentioned in the description. The Combe de Pissavache is steep too. A herd of 15 to 20 ibex. I “skipped” point 9 by going straight on. I was able to take off my snowshoes. More shortcuts at the end, for example when returning to the meadow, an old ski run. 4 hours 55 minutes with a 25-minute break. A splendid, wild route, which requires good equipment in winter, but which doesn’t seem to present any major dangers to me.

A superb hike with stunning scenery. A challenging route, both uphill and downhill.

A lovely walk, with no real difficulties apart from a few steep sections. At point 6, the descent into the Pissavache valley isn’t marked at the start, but with the instructions in the ‘Details’ section, you’ll find your way. Magnificent views and plenty of flowers this August. Very few people about,

Yes, the description is suitable for a summer hike, not during the winter season

I gave it an average rating for the description, but this is based on a winter experience, with snow… This hike has trail markings on the ground (covered by snow…) and the off-trail section wasn’t ideal that day without snowshoes… We didn’t make it all the way to the end because we were sinking in too much and it was becoming a struggle. We’ll do it again in the summer....
