Park at the Benfeld lake car park on the outskirts of Benfeld in the direction of Herbsheim (Rue du Rhin).
(S/E) Head towards the lake and take the path on the right marked Anneau Vert, which goes around it, heading west and following the La Lutter stream.
(1) Turn right and follow the Green Ring trail south. This is the fitness trail. Stay in the woods and, after turning north, cross two cycle paths. You will come to a crossroads.
(2) Turn onto the path on the right marked with the Green Ring sign, heading east. Be careful not to miss the path. You will come to another crossroads at the St-Materne Chapel and the Materne spring.
(3) Continue straight ahead, still following the green ring markings. Continue along the path in the forest, following the green ring markings, heading west. You will arrive at the gravel pit. Walk along the gravel pit on the left, heading south-west, and continue to follow the green ring markings to the Benfeld lake car park (end of the Lutter Route).
You can end your walk here, or continue on.
(S/E) Continue on the Ill route by heading straight on towards Benfeld, following the blue ring markings this time, heading west. You will arrive at the banks of the Muhlbach river.
(4) Turn right before the bridge that crosses it and take the Blue Ring trail heading north-east (Centre de Tri). Follow the Blue Ring trail to the end of the hike. You will reach the first houses in Sand.
(5) Cross the Muhlbach river and enter the village. At the exit of Sand, turn right to reach the left bank of the Ill. Follow it to the bridge.
(6) Turn left after the bridge over the Ill and follow the Blue Ring trail along the right bank of the Ill. You will reach a meadow.
(7) Cross the meadow heading south-east, to the right, just opposite Werde Castle on the other side of the Ill. Continue to follow the Anneau Bleu markings.
(8) Turn right onto the path heading south, following the Blue Ring markings, until you reach the Sainte-Materne chapel.
(3) Then take the path on the right for the second time to reach the car park at the Benfeld lake (S/E).
