Description of the walk

Departure from the Maison du Temps Libre (MTL) in Witternheim, Rue de Hilsenheim, where there is a car park and an information board. Follow the red ring markings throughout the route to discover the Ried du Centre Alsace. Informative signs provide information on the fauna, flora and history of this beautiful area, which is well worth exploring.

(S/E) Set off along the Hanfgraben stream. Immediately pass the sign about the river between the two. Cross Rue de Kogenheim, continue along the stream, then turn right to cross the bridge and reach the sign about the flora and the Ried.

(1) Turn left and go straight ahead to join the D82. Turn left and walk carefully along the road to the edge of the wooded area.

(2) Cross over and turn right onto a path that joins a crossroads after two bends. Turn right, reach another crossroads at the corner of a copse and turn left to follow it.

(3) Turn right and head towards the hamlet of Neunkirch and its place of pilgrimage.

(4) Cross the road and continue straight ahead, passing close to St Anne's Church and the cemetery. Then follow the path that runs along the edge of a wood and eventually reaches a crossroads by a small private pond.

(5) Turn right and continue straight ahead until you reach the D82: sign about the flora and the Ried.

(6) Cross carefully and continue straight ahead on a path (not shown on the map) that runs alongside the stream at a distance. You will reach another sign about aquatic life.

(7) Continue to the bridge built by the municipality to cross the Laufgraben stream that runs alongside the village.

(8) Continue on the left without crossing it and walk along the pond. You will reach a bridge with an information sign. You will come out on Rue de Hilsenheim.

(9) Turn right and follow the road for about 50 metres before turning right again to walk along the lake in the other direction. Once you reach the bridge, turn left and return to the Maison du Tamps Libre and its car park (S/E).

Very nice route. Despite the gloomy weather, we saw some beautiful things. A fun route for the whole family. Worth doing again and again.

Very clear and easy signposting.

A lovely walk in the Ried: meadows, copses, streams... and Neunkirch (a pretty cluster of buildings)

Thank you for describing this pleasant new route with beautiful unobstructed views of the meadows and fields of the Ried. Rest benches are few and far between, except at the Neunkirch pilgrimage site, which offers a welcome break. As stated in the description, the path can sometimes be muddy, and we had some difficulty crossing the meadow between points 6 and 7 without getting our feet wet! A plus: at the start, a flyer provides a map of the route with a QR code and a description of the two other shorter versions that do not pass through the Neunkirch pilgrimage site.
