Description of the walk

Park at the car park of the old Refuge de la Rivière Blanche: picnic areas available.

(S/E) Follow the yellow markings. After a few dozen metres, you’ll come to the first river to cross – that sets the tone.

(1) Immediately afterwards, take the path on the right and pass several flights of steps leading down to the river below for those wishing to cool off.

(2) At the last flight of steps leading down to the river on your right, continue to follow the main path.

(3) Cross a second ford and continue until you reach a junction.

(4) Take the path on the left after the sign.

(5) Cross the third ford, which is usually the last one with water, though this varies depending on the weather, of course. From there, it’s an almost continuous climb through the rainforest. You may (or may not) appreciate the magnificent endemic species found in the area. You’ll reach a junction where a shortcut is possible: see the Practical Information section.

(6) Take the path on the right to stay on the long route. It climbs a little further before you can enjoy the view.

(7) You’ll emerge from the rainforest. From here on, there’s an unobstructed view of the surrounding valleys for the rest of the hike, and you can enjoy the succession of panoramic views. Follow a wide, easily passable track that makes a large circular loop to the left before reaching the junction with the short route.

(8) Continue down to the right , taking in the view of the Rivière Blanche. Watch out for slippery spots if the rocks are wet; this applies to the entire hike.

(1) Go straight on, cross the ford again and return to the car park of the old refuge (S/E).

Notes

The entrance to PPRB Park is a 1-hour drive from the centre of Nouméa. It then takes about 35 minutes by car to reach the old Rivière Blanche refuge, which is the starting point for this hike.

Several picnic tables are set up along the roadside pretty much all the way along the route.

PPRB entrance fee: 600 CFP per person; season tickets available. Park closed on Mondays and Tuesdays.

There are several river crossings, so make sure you are properly equipped.

All information about the PPRB and an official map of all the trails can be found on the official website: https://www.province-sud.nc/decouvrir-et-visiter/pprb/

From the same starting point, you can also take the Renaissance Mine Trail.

Alternative route at (6): for those wishing to shorten the walk, you can take the short alternative route and continue to the left to reach point (8) directly, which saves 1.8 km but means missing out on some lovely views.

Worth a visit

A magnificent stretch of rainforest, followed by stunning panoramic views over the Rivière Blanche valley between (7) and (8).
