Faré No. 3 at the Camping des Bois du Sud (or the campsite entrance, whichever you prefer) is accessible from the Route de Yaté. See Practical Information.
(S/E) Follow the red and white markings of the GR® Sud (throughout the first section of the route). After crossing the campsite track, you’ll reach the first section of rainforest, which will last for roughly the first half of the route. After about 1.1 km, you’ll reach the dry forest.
(1) There is more shade from here onwards. Continue to follow the GR® markings until you reach Col Agathis. A sign indicates the direction of Pic du Cintre (30 mins).
(2) Leave the GR® and turn right just before the sign, then head almost straight up towards the south-south-west. After about 250 m, you’ll reach a first magnificent unobstructed viewpoint over Lake Yaté. Enjoy the panorama.
(3) From here, the path is no longer very well maintained, with plenty of tall grass. Overall, it’s not impossible, though you’ll occasionally find yourself wading through grass up to your thighs; however, as the scrub consists of fairly short plants, it remains perfectly passable (this was the case in April 2026). Gaiters or trousers can make things easier.
There are two options:
1) You can stop the hike at this point and retrace your steps.
2) To continue, it is recommendedto use the app (or a hiking GPS to locate the GPS track more easily) – the option chosen for the description below and the route on the map.
Follow the ridge path (which is fairly straightforward). After passing through alternating areas of ferns and bare rock, you’ll reach the summit of Bù Niri Kwê, where the view is absolutely stunning.
(4) Descend carefully (it is quite steep) to the sign you passed on the way up.
(2) Join the GR® on the left, heading in the opposite direction to the outward journey; there are no particular difficulties on this return section to Faré No. 3 at the campsite (or the campsite entrance, whichever you prefer) (S/E).
