Park at the Mont-Dore Trailhead North car park, accessible by car in thirty minutes from Nouméa and located after the Col de Plum. There aren’t many spaces, so plan to arrive early. However, the area isn’t generally very busy, so you shouldn’t have too much trouble finding a space.
(S/E) The trail starts to the left of the car park and there is an information board at the start of the route. For the first five kilometres, follow an old track with a very steady gradient of 10%: this first section therefore requires a steady effort. There are panoramic views at almost every bend. There are no junctions, so you shouldn’t have any trouble finding your way: if in doubt, follow the yellow markings. You’ll come to a sharp left-hand bend.
(1) Navigate this bend to stay on the route: do not continue straight ahead.
(2) Follow the wooden steps to the left of the main path. From here, the climb becomes a little steeper. Continue to follow the yellow markings until you reach a three-way junction.
(3) Keep to the right. The mast, which marks the end of the climb, is clearly visible and serves as a landmark. Reach the summit: stunning views.
(4) Retrace your steps along the ascent route. Take care not to slip in wet weather on the upper section of the route leading back to the main track. Return to the Nord Mont-Dore Trailhead car park (S/E).
