Description of the walk

From the centre of Salon-de-Provence, head towards Avignon. On leaving the town, turn right towards the A7 (Salon Nord entrance towards Avignon and Lyon). Cross the EDF canal, go under the motorway and immediately turn right towards SPA and Tallagard. Park in the Tallagard car park.

(S/E) From the car park, take the Haut Chemin du Tallagard opposite and follow the green arrow signs for 200 metres.
Turn right between the cypress hedge (marker R0102), go through the gate and continue on the paved road until you reach the reservoirs.

(1) Leave the road and take the botanical trail on the left. At the first fork, take the left path that runs alongside a pine plantation. When you approach a ruin, pass it and turn right to climb up towards it. Turn left to find numerous terraces a little higher up (Bancau, pronounced "bankaou"). Cross these well-reconstructed terraces to reach a track.
Turn left onto this track and follow it for 100 m, then take the first path on the left which leads to the orientation table.

(2) Take the path on the right that joins the previous track, turn right for 10 metres and then take the path on the left that descends into the heath. At the next crossroads, turn right and you will start to see some drystone shelters. 100 metres further on, as you approach another drystone shelter, take the path on the left that joins the track.
Turn left and you will soon come to a crossroads. Take the concrete path opposite. 300m further down, leave the path that branches off to the left, then the next one.

(3) Turn left onto the third path marked with a sign for La Pastorale. This section of the trail is in the heart of the drystone shelter village, which are scattered everywhere. Continue downhill, skirting the drystone shelters on your left, and when the path forks, leave the left-hand path (marked in red) and take the right-hand path. When you approach a path that descends to the left, leave it and continue on the flat.
At the next two crossroads, turn left.

(4) Keep to the right and 150 metres further on, turn left to descend. Turn left again to come out between the reservoirs and then a little further down at the ruins of the Bailli de Suffren hunting lodge.

(5) Go around the ruins on the left and descend through the pine trees to rejoin the road you took on the way up.
Go downhill to the left for almost 400m to rejoin the Haut Chemin du Tallagard. Turn left to return to the car park (S/E).

Practical information

The trail is marked by a green arrow and there are numerous information boards along the route.

In the nearby area

The Bancau (pronounced 'bankaou') or Restanques.
These dry stone walls were used to transform the uneven terrain into agricultural terraces and prevent rainwater from running off. This made it possible to grow vines, olive trees and fruit trees thanks to better soil irrigation and easier access for ploughing and harvesting.
Drystone shelters
Drystone shelters Shepherds could shelter from the rain and sun, store a few tools and even sleep near their flocks.
The Pavilion of the Bailiff of Suffren
Pierre-André de Suffren, Bailiff of the Order of Malta, Vice-Admiral of France. He was one of the most famous sailors during the reigns of Louis XV and Louis XVI. His family originally came from Tuscany and settled in Salon de Provence in the 14th century. This house was his hunting lodge, where he came regularly.
Admire the corner mullioned window.

This walk can be completed with the Agassons trail

As a senior couple, we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.
The cool, grey weather on this January Tuesday did nothing to detract from the charm of this hike.
Shortly after setting off, we came across some magnificent young cedar trees that had been planted to reforest the area.
The orientation table helps you find your way around the area.
The beautiful and numerous drystone shelters, varying greatly in size and shape, bear witness to a bygone era.
Similarly, the remains of the Bailli de Suffren's hunting lodge exude a certain nostalgia.
A GPS is very useful for following the trail...
Many thanks to the author for sharing.

Hello,
The explanations are not always very clear and following the trail is not easy. I had to go back and forth a few times because there are many trails in Tallagard. The trail is very pleasant with beautiful views.
Thank you.

This route is the Pastorale route published several years ago by the Salon tourist office. Unfortunately, it does not include the agro-pastoral heritage trail created in 2017 by the Salon Patrimoine et Chemins association, with information panels on the ground produced by the Town Hall and the Tourist Office.
I had published this route, but as the earlier route exists, it is not available on Visorando (JPSAN route 2348770), which is a shame. Many people get lost between this route and the heritage trail.

beautiful hike, very accessible with beautiful views and many types of drystone shelters
you need to follow the GPS track on the Visio Rando app as there are many paths and the green trail markings are difficult to see. The map printed from the website is poorly framed: the route is printed at the wrong scale, very small and illegible....

We didn't use a map, as we had a GPS, which was useful for this hike, which was full of small paths that weren't always marked. Superb views and interesting ruins. A very beautiful walk that can be done with children.

I was pleasantly surprised by this walk as I didn't expect to find so many different drystone shelters in this mountain range. It would be good to include a drawing to identify the shrubs mentioned on the signs. Luckily I had the interactive map to guide me as it wasn't easy to follow the route.

Hello,

It's a shame that quite a few markers are missing

Visorando does not recommend using markers as they can be modified or deleted, whereas information on the ground is reliable.

Fortunately, the route is easy for those who know the area and have a map

Visorando provides a detailed description (which could be improved) and an IGN map at a scale of 1:25,000

, but I imagine that anyone arriving at Tallagard for the first time will probably miss some parts of the route, but they won't get lost, which is what matters!

Visorando offers a virtual signposting service for those who have difficulty finding their way around: a GPS app.

See you soon!
