The tour starts in front of the SCNF railway station. On the other side of the railway line, there is a free car park; it can be reached via Boulevard Danton.
(S/E) Opposite the station, take Boulevard du Maréchal Foch, then take the second right onto Avenue Paul Bourret. Continue along the avenue until you reach the Marius Fabre Soap Factory (open to visitors).
(1) Turn round and take the first right onto Boulevard Aristide Briand. Go to the end, cross Place Morgan, then take the pedestrian street opposite (Avenue Pierre Mendès-France). At the end, turn right onto Boulevard Jean Jaurès, then cross it shortly afterwards to reach Allée du Fossé Saint-Jacques. After the right-angle bend, you’ll see a tower, the remains of the medieval fortifications. Then turn right onto Rue de Babylone, which bends sharply to the left and becomes Rue Trez Castel. About thirty metres past the bend, you’ll see the Trez Castel fountain and washhouse.
A few metres further on, turn right onto Rue de la Tour to reach the base of the rock on which the castle was built. Turn left, walk along the cliff, then head back down via Rue du Four Trez Castel and turn right onto Rue Trez Castel. Carry on straight ahead (Rue Arlatan) until you reach Cours Carnot. Turn right and walk up the avenue to the Fontaine Moussue.
(2) Turn right to pass under the Clock Tower, and continue straight on along Rue de l’Horloge until you reach the end. Then turn left onto Rue du Bourg Neuf to arrive in front of Saint-Michel Church. Opposite the church porch, head towards the castle and climb the steps to reach the castle gate.
(3) Enter the castle courtyard to admire the view over Salon, then return to the entrance.
(3) Go down the steps opposite the gate and continue straight on along Rue Jean Blanchard. Then turn right and follow Cours Gimon to Place Gambetta.
(4) Turn left once, then left again to join Rue Lafayette: opposite No. 213, you can admire the gate of the former Ursuline convent. Continue along Rue Lafayette, turn left into Rue des Ursulines, then right onto Cours Gimon. Follow it to the town hall.
(5) Carry on straight ahead along Cours Victor Hugo. Turn right onto Rue Maréchal Joffre and continue until you reach the foot of Saint-Laurent Church.
(6) Walk round the basilica, either clockwise or anti-clockwise.
(6) Head back down Rue Pontis. When you reach the end (Fontaine du Puits du Mouton), take Rue des Frères Jourdan (look out for the kiosk on the left), then turn left to cross Place Charles de Gaulle. Cross Boulevard Nostradamus and take Rue Georges Clémenceau opposite. Opposite No. 62, turn left into the entrance to the Parc de la Légion d’Honneur and walk through the park.
(7) On exiting, turn right onto Boulevard de la République, then turn left onto Avenue Émile Zola to return to the station (S/E).
