Description of the walk

(S/E) We start our walk on Jungfernstieg street by the Eutin Castle Gardens, where we park our car. Alternatively, you can take the train to Eutin railway station. From there, it’s about 500 metres to the lakeshore. Below the Tralauteich, we walk eastwards through the Eutin Castle Gardens.

(1) After a short detour through the kitchen garden, we follow the markings for the ‘Großer Eutiner See Rundweg’ circular walk (red horizontal bars on a white background) down to the lake and then turn right, walking along the shore.

(2) Shortly afterwards, we look across to Liebesinsel, the bathing island featured in the popular Immenhof films, which were shot here in the area.

(3) The Redderkrug pier is a great place to take a break. Tip: This is also where the excursion boats cruising on the lake stop, in case you’d like to shorten the walk. At the Redderkrug bathing spot – a small beach – the route takes you past the lake’s eastern shore and into the woods. Simply follow the markings, which lead you back towards Eutin along a wide forest track running parallel to the lake’s northern shore.

(4) After a few kilometres, we reach the Bebensund Bridge. From the bridge, you can look out over the picturesque open-air swimming pool, a small harbour and across the lake to Eutin Castle. We continue to follow the shore of the Großer Eutiner See. The benches along the lakeside promenade are ideal for a break.

(5) Just before the castle, we leave the promenade and the lakeside path, turn right and, shortly afterwards, turn left across the bridge towards the castle. In the inner courtyard, we keep to the right and leave the castle via the southern bridge, which leads into the castle gardens. We turn right, then right again, right once more, then left, and walk across the castle square to St Michael’s Church; we keep to the left and then turn left.

(6) We take a detour via the market square. We leave the market square at its south-eastern end. We continue through Dr Evers Gang back to the starting point (S/E), our car park on Jungfernstieg.
