Santo Domingo de la Calzada, where the hen crowed after she had died

Santo Domingo de la Calzada was founded by the saint after whom it is named, with the aim of helping pilgrims on the Way of St James. It is a resting place on the Way of St James. Among other things, you must see its cathedral and stroll amongst the many churches, historic monuments and narrow streets, which can keep you occupied for half a day.
I visited this town during the fifty-third stage of my Camino de Santiago.

Description of the walk

From your accommodation, head to the front of the cathedral, on Plaza del Santo.

(S) Opposite Santo Domingo de la Calzada Cathedral, turn left onto Calle Mayor then turn right to walk under the vaulted archway. You will arrive at the entrance to the cathedral museum. (Allow 2 hours for the visit). After your visit, head right to reach Plaza de España, opposite the Town Hall and the Alhóndiga Monument. Cross the square from west to east and head down Calle de los Corralones. Turn left twice to follow the LR-111 alongside the walls of the buildings mentioned above. At the fork, continue straight on along Avenida Burgos. Walk alongside the medieval walls of Santo Domingo de la Calzada and continue to the roundabout. Cross it to find yourself in front of a sculpture dedicated to pilgrims and facing the Convent of San Francisco. (Allow one hour for the visit).

(1) With your back to the convent, cross the road carefully and head right to walk along Avenida Juan Carlos on the footpath. Pass between the café and restaurant terraces, then past the bandstand and continue to the traffic lights.

(2) Turn left onto Calle Alcalde Rodolfo Varona, then right onto Calle Pinar. Continue to the end of the street and turn left onto Calle Sor María de Leiva. Walk past the Sor María de Leiva Tower and continue to the junction.

(3) Turn left onto Calle Mayor. Continue to the Cistercian Abbey (open to visitors, but it was closed when I was there).

(4) Turn left onto Calle Monjas, then right at the fountain to cross Plaza de la Alameda.

(5) Turn left onto Calle Mayor, then left onto Plaza del Santo (S/E) where, to finish your walk, you can visit the Torre Exenta followed by the Virgen de la Plaza Chapel.
