Saint-Didier

A walk to discover the village of Saint-Didier-d'Allier from above. A beautiful descent from Chier to Saint-Didier overlooking the Allier valley, the Rouchoux Gorges and the castle of Saint-Didier.
The return to Saint-Privat d'Allier is partly along the road, but it is narrow and very beautiful.

Description of the walk

(S/E) From the town centre, follow the D589 towards Le Puy-en-Velay for a few hundred metres.
(1) Leave this road and turn right onto theGR®®65to reach the hamlet of Pique-Meule.

(2) The path crosses the Rouchoux stream and then climbs steeply to join a perpendicular path. Turn right.

(3) Follow the sign for "Rocher Grand" to enjoy the panoramic view of Saint-Privat-d'Allier. Allow 20 minutes for the round trip. Return to theGR®®65and continue climbing to the right until you reach the village of Le Chier.

(4) At the fork, turn left and cross the central area.

(5) Just after the town hall (picnic table), turn right to leave the village. Pass a cross and then the Chier wash house. Cross the Chier stream. Continue south, ignoring several paths branching off to the left and right, and cross the Charnier stream.

pass the peatland cross made of basalt rock. Continue downhill on the road until you reach the D40. Opposite, on the other side of the road, is the village of Saint-Didier-d'Allier.

(7) Take the D40 on the right and continue along the road towards Saint-Privat-d'Allier for 2.2 km.

(8) After passing under a high-voltage power line, at a hairpin bend to the right, leave the tarmac and follow a path that climbs steeply inside the bend.

(4) Reach the junction with theGR®®65. Turn left, following the red and white markings of the Saint-Jacques trail, to reach the hamlet of Pique-Meule, which you already passed on the way there.

(2) Join the D589 and the first houses of Saint-Privat-d'Allier to return to the starting point (S/E).

Beautiful hike with stunning views, but the easy rating is misleading as the elevation changes are significant
on very steep paths with poor signposting, especially at point 8, where the path that connects to the GR 65
is not marked, but it was indicated by a small cairn that must have been put there by hikers before us.

A very pleasant walk where we meet walkers on their way to Santiago de Compostela
We walk along the road, but it is very quiet
Beautiful scenery and St Privas d'Allier is so worth the detour

An interesting walk with interesting remains around Le Chier (old post box, wash house, cross). Lovely view when you arrive in Saint-Didier. The section on tarmac road is quite long, but this isn't a problem given the low traffic
