Saint-Coulomb and the circular route around La Touesse

A nice little walk, partly on the Sentier des Douaniers on the GR®34. Superb view from the headlands, especially at low tide when the rocks are exposed and covered with sea spray. In good weather, the view stretches as far as Cap Fréhel to the west and Pointe du Grouin and the Herpin lighthouse to the east.

Description of the walk

Departure from the La Touesse beach car park.

(S/E) At the car park exit, head towards the beach. After 60 m, take the path on the left and join the GR®34.

Red and white GR® markings.

Follow it to the left, along the shore and then the beach.

(1) At the end of the beach, continue on the GR® and walk along the seafront to the northern tip of Pointe du Meinga.

(2) Continue along the GR®, staying close to the edge of the cliff.

(3) At the fork, take the path on the left to climb back up the slope, then continue to the right, heading south towards the trees. Pass under the trees, leave the car park on your left, and begin the descent along the road.

(4) At the crossroads, continue along the road on the right for about 100 metres. At the fork, take the stony path on the left and follow it to the beach.

(5) Turn left. Walk along the rocks until you reach an old retaining wall of a mill, which no longer exists.

(6) Cross over and head to the opposite beach. Head towards the old lifeboat shed and take the GR® via the wooden steps on the left. Continue along the path. After the dam, the GR®34 markings end. Take the path on the right, which is quite steep.

(7) Join the D201 and follow it downhill on the right, passing Vieux Châtel on your left. At the crossroads, cross the D201 and take the first road on the left, then immediately left towards Le Tintochet.

(8) Keep left, pass Ville Huet, and reach L'Ermitage.

(9) Cross the D74 and take Rue de l'Ermitage. At the end of the street, take the dirt path that leads to Rue du Lac.

(10) Turn left, heading uphill. At the lake, turn left.

(11) Cross the D201 to take the dirt track opposite. It joins the departmental road. Follow it on the left until you reach the Anse Du Guesclin car park. On the right, opposite the D201, stands the monument in honour of St Colomban.

(12) Turn around and join the GR® trail, following it to the right.

Notes

Take care when crossing roads.

Check the tide levels before setting off to keep your feet dry when walking along Havre du Lupin, where the water depth is less than 9 m. If the water depth is too great, from (4) you can go via La Guimorais, staying on the GR® trail, and reach the mooring area to rejoin (7).

Worth a visit

There are several malouinières (traditional houses) in the area, in particular the one in Ville Bague on the outskirts of Saint Coulomb, which is open to visitors.

Enjoy the beaches at Du Guesclin, La Touesse or Les Chevrets. Be careful of the currents.

Fishing is possible at the Étang de Sainte-Suzanne, but the fish are not edible!
