Description of the walk

From Sare, take the D306 road (towards the Sare Caves). Ignore the road to the caves which branches off to the left and continue towards the Etxola wildlife park. Take the next road on the left, pass the wildlife park and continue along the track * until you reach a sheepfold.

(S/E) Take the wide path heading south. The path winds through the forest and emerges into a meadow, eventually reaching a crossroads higher up at the foot of a stone watchtower.

(1) Turn left, heading east, onto the path leading to the foot of the stone tower.
Continue south-east and then east along the path which climbs to the pass at the foot of Saiberri.

(2) Follow the path along the ridge to climb quickly to the summit.

(3) Take the same path back to return to the car park (S/E).

Waypoints

  1. S/E : mi 0 - alt. 702 ft - Car park near a sheepfold
  2. 1 : mi 0.77 - alt. 1,407 ft - Junction of paths
  3. 2 : mi 1.08 - alt. 1,552 ft - Pass at the foot of the summit
  4. 3 : mi 1.18 - alt. 1,647 ft - Summit - Saiberri

Notes

There are no water sources along the route.

  • The track leading to the start is certainly passable by car, but low-clearance vehicles will find it difficult to climb.

I’ve adjusted the starting point of the walk to make it easier to get there by car.

There are also information boards on techniques for hunting wood pigeons.

A pleasant family walk, with a few slippery patches after a rainy day.
But we didn’t manage to spot any megaliths – they were probably hidden away in the vegetation...
