Moratinos - Sahagún

Sixty-first stage of the Camino de Santiago. This short route is a transitional stage, allowing you time to visit the Virgen del Puente before arriving in Sahagún and then exploring the town, its churches and monasteries.
It is also a good opportunity to rest after the long stages that have gone before, in order to prepare for the long stages ahead.

Description of the walk

(S) From the rest area, head north-west and follow the small road to reach Moratinos. Breakfast available at the entrance to the village.

(1) Walk through the village. Turn right after the church, then left in front of the white house to pass under the power line. Continue to the fork.

(2) Turn right onto the white track and zigzag between the high-voltage power lines until you reach a 90° bend heading north.

(3) Continue on to reach the village of San Nicolás de Real Camino. Carry on to the junction.

(4) Turn left, pass the church and continue along the road that skirts the village. Cross the River Sequilla before arriving at some agricultural sheds.

(5) Continue westwards across farmland. Walk on until you reach the fork.

(6) Turn right (north-west) and walk alongside a high-voltage power line until you reach a T-junction.

(7) Turn right (north-east) then left just before the N-120. Follow this road to the bridge over the Rio Valderaduey.

(8) Take care when crossing the bridge, then carefully cross the N-120 to continue along the stony path running parallel to the stream. A few hundred metres further on, turn left to cross a medieval bridge and arrive at the site of Vigen Del Puente Ermita, where there is a hermitage and a pleasant rest area.

(9) Leave the site by passing between the two pretty statues marking the geographical centre of the Camino and the midpoint between Roncesvalles and Santiago de Compostela.
Continue along the stony path through the fields and proceed to the underpass beneath the N-120.

(10) After passing under the road, continue on to reach the outskirts of the town of Sahagún via Calle Rda. de la Estación. Continue heading north-west, passing a large hotel, before reaching a junction with the road to Burgos.

(11) Cross carefully, heading towards the Ethnographic Museum. Follow the railway line until you reach the junction with the Arco road and a bridge.

(12) Turn left, cross the bridge over the railway tracks and continue to the junction with Avenida de la Constitución.

(13) Turn right towards the Camino Santiago and continue to the fork. Refreshments available at a grocery shop on the right

(14) Take the small street on the left, onto Calle Antonio Nicolás, and continue straight on until the Stop sign.

(15) Cross Avenida Doctores Bermejo y Calderón with care. On your right you can see the Arco de San Benito and the monastery. Continue straight ahead along Calle Antonio Nicolás. Carry on to the pretty bridge spanning the River Céa.

(16) After the bridge, continue north-west, passing the Spanish Red Cross, then the swimming pool and the football stadium, before arriving about a hundred metres further on at the entrance to the Pedro Ponce campsite (E).

Worth a visit

(9) Before reaching Sahagún, you cannot miss the Virgen del Puente and its Ermita: a long chapel with a bell-tower wall built along the nave above the chancel. The brick chevet, with its uneven blind arches, arrow slit and geometric friezes, is the oldest part.

(15) In Sahagún, a town characterised by its brick architecture, be sure to visit the three churches of La Trinidad and San Juan to the east; San Lorenzo (13th century) to the north; and San Tirso (12th century) and the monasteries to the south-west, lining the route. Near San Tirso you will also find the triumphal arch, known as the Arco de San Benito, which is in fact the former monumental gate built in 1662 for the Convent of San Facundo.
