Sa Punta and Cala Aiguafreda via the Cami de Ronda

This loop starting from Sa Riera initially runs through woodland and leads to the pretty site of Torre de Mas d'en Pinc at the entrance to Begur. You quickly cross the eastern residential areas before rejoining the Cami de Ronda. This trail runs along a balcony offering magnificent views and leads to Cala Sa Punta, then to Cala Aiguafreda, two discreet and idyllic spots for swimming in the summer. The final section also offers many other opportunities for swimming from the easily accessible rocks along the coast. Despite the distance, the real difficulty of this hike should not be underestimated, as it can be tricky to find your way due to the large number of unmarked paths and several very steep ascents and descents that will leave you breathless and your legs aching.

Description of the walk

In Begur, follow signs for Sa Riera. When you reach a crossroads not far from the beach, turn left towards the signposted car park. About 50 metres further on, turn right onto the narrow, steeply ascending street that leads to a partially shaded car park, which costs £3 per day in high season.

(S/E) Go back down the access road to the car park, turn left and continue to the crossroads.

(1) Ignore the cul-de-sac leading to the beach and continue on the right, negotiating the bend. Continue for about 300 metres, then take the first steep road on the left (Carrer Cova del Infern), which runs alongside a campsite on the right. At the last bungalow, the road gives way to a wide, stony track through the woods. When you reach a fork, turn right and climb steadily to the crossroads at the top.

(2) Continue straight ahead and stay on the same track to reach the Mirador del Passeig Carmen Arraya: enjoy the view of the Sa Riera cove and, beyond, the vast beach of Pals. Continue until you reach a paved dead-end road and follow it uphill, keeping in the same direction until you reach the fork at Torre de Mas d'en Pic.

(3) Turn left towards this beautiful architectural complex, go around it on the left and follow the wide path that passes under the site, making a loop to the right. When you reach a fork, go straight ahead, keeping to the path that curves to the left and comes to a crossroads.

(4) Turn left, cross a difficult passage consisting of three very high wooden steps and continue.

No signposts

Continue to the right at the next intersection, coming out onto an open space with community gardens. Go around them to join the paved road that circles Bégur.

(5) Follow it, turning left, then right to go alongside a car park and begin the very steep climb leading to Cami del Mar.

Cross over and head towards the street called Cami del Semafor, which is marked as a dead end. At the bend, continue straight ahead, following the markings, then turn left at the crossroads, staying on Cami del Semafor.

(6) Leave the road and follow a path on the right that enters the woods and runs along the fence of houses as closely as possible before coming out onto Carrer de la Font de la Salut. Continue left, turn left at the crossroads and join Cami de Ronda at a sign for "Begur - Cala Sa Tuna".

(7) Turn left and follow the magnificent balcony path offering breathtaking views of Aiguablava beach and its cove on the right. Reach the junction with a track.

(8) Cross it and take the path opposite. Walk alongside a housing estate on your left and start descending to a partially paved track (Cami del Semafor).

(9) Turn left and continue to the bend, where you should turn right, following the signs and directions for "Begur - Sa Tuna". After a few wide hairpin bends, you will reach a paved road. Follow it uphill to the junction with another road (Carrer del Rec de l'Aigua), which you should follow to the right until it ends.

(10) Take the Cami de Ronda on the left. After a fairly strenuous climb, the path levels out and continues gently downhill. Ignore all the paths on the left, leave the access to the small cape on your right and head for Cala de Sa Tuna.

(11) Go down the steps on the right leading to the beach. Walk along the beach, pass the small square and the rusty boat anchor, then turn right. Further on, climb the steps on the left, which continue along a pretty paved slanting street lined with flowers.

No signposts

(12) Temporarily leave the signposting that branches off to the left, go down the steps and then turn left to follow the coast as closely as possible. Pass the viewpoint and rejoin the GR®92 signposting.

(13) Go straight ahead and you will quickly reach the delightful Cala d'Aiguafreda.

(14) Head right to finish going around it, then rejoin the path along the sea. Climb the long staircase leading to the Carretera de Cap sa Sal.

(15) Turn left, then right at the hairpin bend to follow Carrer de s'Antiga, which climbs steeply. Continue to the junction with Carrer Sa Nau Perduda.

(16) Turn right, continue to the start of the bend and take the path on the left. This continues with a very steep descent followed by an even steeper climb that will leave you breathless. Continue along the path that passes Cap des Forns and then Punta de la Creu. Follow the coastline, ignoring the various paths on the left.

(17) Ignore the steps on the left and stay on the path that passes over the rocks alongside beautiful properties.

(18) Turn right and follow the beautiful path under the pine trees, which gently leads back to Sa Riera and its beach. Join Carrer del Mar.

No signposts

(19) Follow this street to the junction of the loop.

(1) Turn right and retrace your steps to return to the car park (S/E).

Notes

Despite its distance, this hike is classified as difficult for the following reasons:
* The first part up to (7) is tricky with lots of paths that criss-cross each other and sometimes poor signposting.
* The Cami de Ronda from (7) also requires caution: there are multiple trails and the signposting is sometimes unclear. In both cases, the GPX track will be very useful.
* Several sections have very steep slopes both uphill and downhill, so you will need to negotiate these parts carefully and pace yourself.
* The official route of the Cami de Ronda no longer always corresponds to that of the OSM Trails map, which adds an extra difficulty in finding your way around.

There are no water points on the route, but you can quench your thirst and eat at Cala Sa Tuna (11) and Cala d'Aiguafreda (14).

I recommend doing this hike in the direction indicated so that you can enjoy a swim on the way back in one of the many coves or from the rocks along the coast, which are accessible via numerous small paths.

Hiking boots are highly recommended due to the stony terrain.

Although the hike is mostly shaded, I recommend setting off early in the morning during the hot season. The successive climbs require a lot of physical effort and it is essential to stay well hydrated.
