Description of the walk

  • Travel by train (RE or RB) from Darmstadt, Heidelberg or Mannheim.
  • Travel by car via the A5, take the Seeheim-Jugenheim exit, then continue towards Bickenbach; car park on the street ‘Auf der Alten Bahn’

:S/E:: The starting point is on the station forecourt in Bickenbach. Walk through the underpass beneath the railway tracks and straight ahead onto the street ‘Am Stellwerk’. At the next junction, turn right onto ‘Berta-Benz-Straße’. It’s best to cross to the other side of the road here straight away.

Follow “Berta-Benz-Straße” and you’ll pass a few industrial premises on your left. After crossing “Philipp-Reis-Straße”, the footpath turns into a dedicated cycle path.

After a while, the cycle path turns left and you’ll go under the motorway (A5). On your left, you’ll now see open countryside.

You’ll reach a barrier; once past it, turn right and you’ll already be able to see Lake Erlensee through the vegetation along the shore.

(1) Follow the wide path along the lake until you reach a T-junction. Now turn right onto a narrow path. To help you find your way, there is a sign here saying ‘Naturschutzgebiet’ (nature reserve) with the coat of arms of the State of Hesse.

Walk along this path until you come to a gravel track again. Here, turn left.

Carry on straight ahead, pass through a barrier and turn left again just beyond the barrier.

(2) After a few metres, a table-top hill rises up to your right: the 7-hectare former, renaturalised district landfill site.

Walk straight on along the tarmac road until you see a hut belonging to ASV Pfungstadt e.V. on your right, with a lake next to it.

Walk straight past the hut; you’ll already be able to see the Moorsee on your left.

(3) At the end of the Moorsee, turn left and after a few metres you’ll come to a bench. The spot is perfect for a break; during the week you’ll usually be on your own here.

Continue straight on along the Moorsee. At the end of the lake, the path turns into a well-trodden track.

After a while, there’s a short climb; on the other side, turn right and you’ll be back at the shore of Lake Erlensee.

(4) You walk along the shore as far as the kiosk at Erlensee. Now you have the chance to refuel and take a well-deserved break in the beer garden. There’s also a toilet here.

Leaving the beer garden, you first head right, walking along the field below the car park. Your path turns into a tarmac road, which you follow until the next T-junction.

Here, turn left and walk along the Seeheimer Weide towards Bickenbach.

(5) Just before a bridge over the Landbach, there is an information board on the right-hand side, offering another chance to take a break (Seeheimer Weide rest area).

After the information board, continue walking along the tarmac road. The road bends to the right; you’ll pass a farm and turn left at the junction.

The road now climbs gently; you cross the motorway (A5) and rejoin “Berta-Benz-Straße”.

Cross “Berta-Benz-Straße” and turn left. After a few metres, you’ll come to the road “Am Stellwerk” again. Here, turn right.

Now go through the underpass and you’ll be back at the starting point on the station forecourt in Bickenbach (S/E)

It’s a lovely circular walk, where you can start off in the industrial area and buy local honey from a fantastic self-service ‘honey cart’ using the honesty box.
