Description of the walk

Car park near the harbour master’s office in Baume-les-Dames.

(S/E) Set off along the Rhône-Rhine Canal towards the retirement home and the campsite.

(1) Turn left after the campsite and continue to the village hall.

(2) Turn right onto the path that climbs into the forest. Ignore thefirst path on the left (not shown on the IGN map) and take thesecond one, which leads back up to the road.

(3) Once on the road, turn right and cross over to reach the car park opposite.

(4) Turn left onto the ridge path leading to the Roche de Chatard, following the Côte d'Aucroix.

(5) Enjoy the view, then carefully make your way back down to the road.

(6) Cross the road with extreme caution; there is no visibility on the bend. Cross the bridge over the Cusancin. Turn right after the bridge and follow the road until you spot a path climbing up to the left.

(7) Follow this path until you reach a statue of the Virgin Mary. Then turn left and climb up to the Fente de Babre.

(8) Continue along the ridge to reach another viewpoint, the highest point of the hike (512 m).

(9) Continue along the ridge until you reach signposts.

(10) Take a 100-metre detour to the right to see a memorial stone honouring two members of the FFI. Turn back and continue to the right until you reach the junction.

(11) Take the path that descends to the left towards Baume-les-Dames. A few bends further down, you’ll come out onto the cycle path that runs alongside the Doubs.

(12) Turn left to follow the cycle path.

(13) Cross the Pont des Pipes and continue along the Doubs to the starting point (S/E).

A magnificent route, often running along a cliff edge and occasionally steep; best avoided in wet weather.
The bridge over the Cusancin at the foot of the Chatard rock (point 6) is closed until 28 July 2022. At the bottom of the descent, cross very carefully, then turn left and follow the road to the next bridge (point 13). After the bridge, turn right towards the factory, then continue straight on to the bridge currently under repair, where you will rejoin the route described.

I’ve only been a keen hiker for a short while (about ten years), but for me this hike ranks among the best I’ve done
Perfect weather (sunshine and 20°C). The first third is a bit of a climb, though.
Admittedly, the section of the route along the cliff edge can be dangerous with overexcited young children, but with careful attention and parents staying close to their children, it should be fine.
The walk took 2 hours, including a detour to the memorial stone (and getting lost, so we had to retrace our steps back along the cliff path). However, a quick safety tip for this sort of route (cliff path) where the view is magnificent: you tend to look away at the distant view, but it’s probably better to take a quick break to appreciate the scenery. The presence of stones and roots can easily cause you to trip, so be careful.
Great hike

A stunning view of Baume-les-Dames from above
Best done in dry weather as the descent from the Rocher de Châtard is a bit steep, with stones, so it must be slippery in wet weather.
The views are magnificent – it was a real treat!

A lovely walk, best undertaken in dry weather only (slippery limestone). The ridge route is preferable. Magnificent views of the circular Doubs route at Baume-les-Dames from the Chatard cross. Didn’t see a soul at this time of year.
