The Croix de Châtard

The “Croix de Châtard” walk is by far the number one in the top five walks in Baume-les-Dames.
If you only have time for one hike during your visit, this is definitely the one to do.
Accessible and of moderate difficulty, it offers superb views over Baume-les-Dames and the Doubs valley.

Description of the walk

Starting point: Place Jouffroy d’Abbans car park or leisure area (Rue du Moulin Vermoret)

(S/E) Walk along the Doubs, cross the footbridge, then turn left and follow the towpath.

(1) When you reach the lock, cross the bridge and turn right.
Walk along the canal until you reach the mobile homes. Turn left (follow the signs for Camping du Domaine d’Aucroix / Community Centre).
Walk past the campsite reception and cross the car park of the Centre d’Affaires et de Rencontres.

(2) To the right of the building, take the path leading uphill (follow the sign for Châtard). After about 500 m, you’ll notice a gap in the vegetation beneath a telephone line. You can see the mobile homes below. A few metres further on, take the steep path on the left. The path leads out onto the D112 road.

(3) Turn right and walk carefully for about 100 m along the side of this road.

(4) After the bend, at the small car park on the left-hand side of the road (under the power lines), take the path on the left (follow the sign for Rocher de Châtard).
Walk for about 1.5 km to reach the Croix de Châtard (marked with yellow and blue + white and red signs).
Alternative route: see ‘Practical Information’ at.

(5) The Croix de Châtard (7 m high) was erected in 1964. From this viewpoint, you can admire Baume-les-Dames, its hills and the old village of Cour.
A few metres further on, there is another viewing point.
Caution! Steep section after the cross! The ground is slippery in wet weather.
Continue along the ridge and head down to join the departmental road. Due to the sheer drops, take care not to stray from the path.

(6) Cross the D50 with the utmost caution!
You’ll come out at a bend where drivers have no visibility and don’t expect to see pedestrians crossing!
Cross the bridge over the Cusancin, a tributary of the Doubs, and turn left onto Rue des Pipes. Walk past the former Ropp pipe factory, a 19th-century artisanal complex. Continue in this direction until you reach the cycle path.

(7) Turn left towards Baume-les-Dames and cross the footbridge. On your right, you’ll see the Gondé basin, where Jouffroy d’Abbans carried out his first experiments with steam navigation.

(1) Follow the cycle path to the red footbridge, then return to Rue du Moulin Vermoret and your starting point (S/E).

I loved it – it’s brilliant, a must-do
Please note: when you reach the business centre before point 1, if the gate is closed, you can slip through on the right and get past the barrier.
Just one slight downside for me, as I’m out walking my dog: I have to keep him on a lead for the first kilometre and the last kilometre. Also, in wet weather, be careful on the descent after the cross – it’s best to be well equipped.

It’s undoubtedly a superb route, but it will be off-limits for the whole of August 2023. The road, the footpath and the entire mountain range are strictly off-limits due to forestry work. What a shame!

We completed the route in fine, dry weather: it can prove tricky in wet conditions, particularly the descent immediately after the Chatard cross. We followed the ridge route, which offers lovely views over Baumes-les-Dames. We did the route with our children (aged 4 and 7), who are used to hiking, but this downhill section after the cross was a bit tricky...
