Parking is available at Place Jouffroy in Abbans.
(S/E) Take Rue du Moulin Vermoret, which runs alongside the Doubs to the red footbridge.
(1) Cross the footbridge, then turn left and follow the towpath. At the lock, cross the bridge and turn right.
(2) Walk along the canal through the tourist complex. Follow the signs for the campsite/Business and Meeting Centre.
(3) Walk past the campsite entrance and cross the car park of the Centre d'Affaires et de Rencontres. To the right of the building, you will find a marked path that climbs through the woods.
(4) Join the D112. Turn right, walk about 100 m, then turn right onto the marked trail towards Mont Dommage (steep trail). Follow the ridges along the cliff, taking care on the rough sections. You will arrive at a viewpoint overlooking the Doubs valley and Baume-les-Dames.
Continue along the stony path. You will discover other viewpoints here and there (these are not developed). Reach the highest point of the hike: Mont Dommage (569 m).
(5) Descend towards the Bois de la Côte.
(6) Turn left to go to the Belvédère de la Chassignole (developed viewpoint). Follow the signs for Silley-Bléfond. After 200 m, take the path on the right that leads to La Chassignole. From this viewpoint, you can see the village of Fourbanne.
(7) Retrace your steps back to Bois de la Côte.
(6) Go down the path on the left towards Esnans (steep slope). In front of you are the cliffs and the Saut de Gamache viewpoint.
(8) Cross the pretty village of Esnans with its characterful houses and wash house. At the bus shelter on Route des Moulinots, turn right towards Baume-les-Dames. Follow the road to the Baumerousse lock.
(9) Cross the bridge over the lock and turn right onto the towpath (unpaved). This will take you to the footbridge you took on the way there.
There are two options:
- continue straight ahead to enjoy a drink on the terrace at the harbour master's office.
- take the footbridge back to the fork in the road on the way there.
(1) Turn right in the opposite direction to the outward journey and return to the starting point (S/E).
