Description of the walk

Park in the car park at the Rivière Noire information point.

(S/E) Take the main track that heads into the forest and you’ll soon reach the first junction.

(1) Keep to the right, cross a ford a little further on (you may need to take your shoes off to cross) and follow the Machabée Trail (good track). You’ll reach another junction of tracks.

(2) Continue straight ahead to follow the Machabée Trail. After a few bends, just past the last one, you’ll come to a path junction.

(3) Turn right to reach a viewpoint overlooking Rivière Noire Park with the ocean in the background.

(4) Return to the previous junction.

(3) Take the track on the right and follow it until you reach another junction with a path.

(5) Turn right onto the Macchabée Trail towards Macchabée View Point. Navigate a few hairpin bends to reach the Y-junction where the Macchabée and Colophanne paths meet.

(6) Keep left; the track turns into a narrow path that climbs steeply and is sometimes covered in mud. You’ll reach the Macchabee View Point, marked by a small shelter and a bench.
Enjoy the view of the other side of the park from here.

(7) Continue along this track, now on level ground, until you reach the junction with the Colophanne Trail.

(8) Turn right onto this trail and continue to the junction of the two tracks you passed earlier.

(6) Continue the descent to the junction of the path you also passed on the way there.

(5) Leave the track and take the small Pilgrimspfad path on the right. A steep little descent that requires a little care but is nothing complicated. After a few metres, you’ll look out over the valley; from here, you may spot hundreds of Mauritian black flying foxes.
Cross the stream that flows into the Rivière Noire. A few steps further on, you’ll reach the original junction.

(1) Turn right and follow the route you took on the way there to easily find the car park at the Rivière Noire information point (S/E).

Hello, I’m going to Mauritius and Rodrigues in March 2024. Does the Visorando smartphone app work on those two islands?

A top-notch hike with a very varied route. It’s rated as difficult, but I found it quite manageable, especially as you can cut it short halfway through. There’s some stunning scenery to take in. The route is very well signposted – definitely worth a go.

A lovely hike through the diverse forests of Mauritius. Some beautiful views.
The climb between points 6 and 7 is a steep 600-metre ascent. However, it is possible to do the circular route in the opposite direction (6-8-7-6 instead of 6-7-8-6).
Please note: for those with sensitive ankles and legs, the long, very steep descents from 7 to 6 (if going this way) and also from 6 to 1... may prove painful and ultimately take longer than returning to the car park via 3-4-2-1

This hike was a wonderful way to explore Black River National Park.
The route description is very reliable.
For those who don’t want to push themselves too hard from point 6 onwards, as it climbs very steeply despite the steps, it’s better to do the circular route in the opposite direction (points 6/8/7). There are no major difficulties in doing so as there is only one path.
Next, be careful on the descent between point 5 and point 1. It’s best to have good shoes as the descent is steep with stones and roots, all sometimes covered in leaves. We were glad to have our walking poles.
Thanks to the author for enabling us to hike on this beautiful island without having to do any research to find out where to go.
