Yaté Nature Reserve and dam

A round trip hike in the Yaté botanical reserve, with a magnificent panorama of Lake Yaté on the west side and the mouth of the Yaté River on the east side. This route follows the markings of the Yaté Route trail but is the most accessible part, with much less elevation gain (227 m instead of 1000 m) and distance (6.5 km instead of 15 km), while passing through what is probably the most beautiful viewpoint in the park.

Description of the walk

Park in the car park on the right of the track accessible from the RP3 (Route de Yaté).

(S/E) Walk a few metres south to the large sign indicating the start of the Sentier de la Route à Horaires. Turn left and follow the yellow markings. After about 100 metres, you will see a barrier on your right: go through it to continue on the right path and reach a viewpoint overlooking the lake.

(1) Continue along the trail until you reach an intersection.

(2) Stay on the path on the right, which heads east and joins another fork.

(3) Stay on the right-hand path and continue to the viewpoint overlooking the mouth of the Yaté River.

(4) Continue for about 100 metres to reach the official viewpoint, although the view is not as good as at the previous point.

(5) Follow the path in the opposite direction to return to the car park (S/E).

Notes

There is no water along the route. Protect yourself from the sun with a hat, sunglasses, sun cream, etc.

This route is the short and accessible variant of the Sentier de la Route à Horaires.

Longer version: continue along the yellow markings to follow the rest of the Sentier de la Route à Horaires, which more than doubles the distance to be covered, so make sure you bring enough water and a picnic!

After the Yaté Road, the last two kilometres to the starting point are on a track, which is passable in a city car but not after rain.

Worth a visit

Yaté Dam and Lake, mouth of the Yaté River, dozens of species of flora endemic to New Caledonia.
