(S) Starting from the Vallonpierre Refuge, you are in the Écrins National Park. See the practical information.
Walk round the lake on the left-hand side and take the GR®54 (red and white markings), then head for the Clot Xavier Blanc mountain refuge.
(1) From the refuge, continue along the GR® until you reach the Rif du Sap.
(2) In the hamlet, carry on straight ahead, passing the chapel, then rejoin the path towards La Chapelle-en-Valgaudémar.
(3) Leave the GR® here and turn left onto the GRP® variant of the Tour du Vieux Chaillol(yellow and red markings), heading for the Pont des Oules.
(4) Turn right to begin a long climb towards the Lacs de Pétarel; after crossing the Draye de l’Uvette, you’ll come to a tricky section.
(5) Take care on this section: see photo. On the path, the route becomes more exposed. Cables have been installed to help you. Continue the winding ascent to reach the Pétarel Lakes.
(6) Walk alongside the lakes and continue climbing towards the Col de Pétarel to reach the crossroads below the Sebeyras Lakes.
(7) Please note, this section is off-trail: it takes between 5 and 10 minutes; there are no particular difficulties to report, but a good sense of direction is required.
As you approach a rocky outcrop in a scree slope (see photo), leave the marked GRP® path and turn left; a few cairns may help guide you. Keep heading south-east until you reach your destination.
Go round the few large boulders on the left (see photo) and then wind your way to the left of a scree slope.
There is a rocky outcrop ahead of you; go round it to the left, close to the large boulders.
Then, climb a few metres to the right, near a fissure (see photo).
When you reach a grassy ledge (see photo), head left and cross the small stream flowing through the fault from above.
Head right to climb a small hill; beyond it lies the lower Sebeyras lake, where you can camp (E).
