Pastore Refuge - Macugnaga

Another change of valley to reach the large village of Macugnaga at the foot of Monte Rosa via the Col Turlo. The wide path used is absolutely remarkable as it was built by the Italian army to hoist cannons for the defence of the area and for firing exercises.

This walk is part of a multi-day hike: Tour of Monte Rosa

Description of the walk

(S) From the Pastore refuge, head north, cross the torrent on the wide covered footbridge overlooking the Sesia river and you will soon reach the chalets of Alpe Blatte.

(1) Continue the ascent via wide switchbacks to reach the chalets of Alpe Faller.

(2) Continue along numerous switchbacks, walking on the flat stones at the edge. Walk along the upper edge of Lake Turlo and finish the climb at the Turlo Pass (Colle del Turlo).

(3) Begin the descent, passing close to the Lanti bivouac.

(4) Continue the descent north-east, cross Alpe Schena where another change of direction takes you to the large La Piana area.

(5) Enter the forest, continue north-east, following the left bank of the stream. At Quarazza, you will reach Lago delle Fate.

(6) Leave the bank to overlook the stream, cross Isella and begin the final descent towards Macugnaga (E).

Notes

Shelter at the Lanti bivouac: this bivouac is well signposted and is located to the left of the trail (sign).
Water supply at the fountain in Piana.

Please note: in July, the start of the descent is covered with snow. The slope is quite steep, so caution is advised for those who are uncomfortable on this type of surface. For information, we installed a handrail on a very steep snowfield (30°), which completely covered the path for a distance of approximately 100 metres.

Beautiful stage of the Tour du Mont Rose. We did it backwards. Nice to finish at the Pastore refuge. Don't go to the Hotel Edelweiss in Macugnaga!
