Description of the walk

(S) Behind the Elena mountain hut, take the wide path heading eastwards across the pastures. Climb via a series of short switchbacks towards the somewhat derelict alpine farms (2,264 m). Further up, head northwards to reach the Col Ferret pass (2,537 m). Border crossing into Switzerland.

(1) Descend, keeping to the left to go round the top of the vast Revers de la Peule valley. On the hillside, continue along the clearly marked path which crosses the Chaudière mountain pastures and then a few gullies.

(2) Continue down a steeper slope leading to the Chalet de la Peule (2,071 m).

(3) Take a wide track here. Descend via a series of hairpin bends, then cross the Drance de Ferret via the wooden bridge.

(4) Start a short climb on the left bank of the Drance. Reach the village of Ferret.

(5) At the entrance to the hamlet of Ferret, head downhill, cross the Durance and take the path which, through pastures, climbs gently up the hillside and reaches the junction for Léchère-Dessous (1,680 m). Continue on, cross a torrent via a modern footbridge, then head towards the Drance and cross it below the Chalet du Clou.

(6) Take the road to the entrance to the village of La Fouly. Turn left onto the GR® and follow it to Issert, passing through a valley of little interest; for an alternative route, see the section ‘During the hike’.

(7) Leave the village of Issert via the road on the right for 400 metres. Turn left into the wooded meadows onto the path that climbs and crosses the Prénondes torrent. Enter the forest, pass by some old slate quarries, and reach the crossroads at the Affe chalets.

(8) Head up to the left and then turn right. After a traverse along the hillside, you’ll reach the plateau where Lake Champex is situated. Continue along the road to the left and take some shortcuts to reach the centre of the Champex Lac resort (E).

Worth a visit

(3) Here, you can stay in a secluded yurt heated with straw (very traditional).
(6) You can take the bus to Issert (otherwise add 2 hours to the hike) as it is a valley of little interest.
You can stock up on supplies in La Fouly and Champex.
Visit to Champex.
