From Barèges, follow the D918 towards the Col du Tourmalet. After about 2.4 km, at an altitude of 1414 metres, turn right into the forest onto the road towards the Lienz Plateau and the ski lifts. Park near the inn at the end of the road.
(S/E) From the car park at an altitude of 1504 metres, walk back along the road for 150 metres. Look south, on your right, for a clearing with a path through the grass. Follow it until you reach the Camp Rollot chalets.
(1) At elevation 1557, join a carriage track and follow it for a long way opposite to climb up the entire Glère Valley.
(2) At a bend with a cattle park, at around 1680 m, there are two options:
- either stay on the track to the Refuge de la Glère.
- or take a marked path on the left that cuts across the hairpin bends after starting on scree (shorter but steeper). At the exit near the ruins, follow the stony track to reach the Refuge de la Glère.
(3) From the terrace of the refuge, a path leads down to the lake of the same name below.
Continue along the mountainside on a path that winds between the rugged terrain, on a panoramic ridge between the Bolou valley and the Glère lake basin.
(4) At the water intake, cross the stream via the concrete footbridge and climb up to a trail junction.
(5) At this intersection, at an altitude of around 2,230 metres, leave the path to the Refuge Packe on your right and take the path on the left. Climb up a ridge via a few hairpin bends to reach a small plateau (National Park sign). Do not cross the stream.
(6) Keep to the right-hand path, which is sometimes difficult to see, winding its way between granite outcrops and small lakes, to reach the banks of Lac det Mail at 2,340 m.
(7) A large, deep blue lake with a very jagged outline.
The return journey will follow the same route as the outward journey to the Lienz Plateau (S/E).
