Turon de Néouvielle

One of the most beautiful hikes you can do! A 3,000-metre peak, a multitude of lakes and tarns, torrents, mountain pastures, forests, rocky terrain and a ridge path. All this combined in a single hike! Its commanding position offers panoramic views of the magnificent Néouvielle Nature Reserve and its highest point, the Pic de Néouvielle. A feast for the eyes!
You can split the hike over two days by staying overnight at the Refuge de La Glère.

Description of the walk

From Barèges, via the RD 918, before Tournaboup, take a forest track on the right leading up to the “Chez Louisette” inn and park in one of the many small car parks on the edge of the forest.

(S/E) From the car park, head to the base of the Piquette chairlift.

(1) Head due south along a grassy path to Camp Rollot.

(2) Continue straight on, heading due south, along a track suitable for vehicles alongside the Ruisseau de la Glère until you reach a fork in the track (alt. 1,685 m).

(3) Head due south up the paths criss-crossing the bends in the track leading to the Refuge de la Glère. You’ll reach a fork.

(4) Turn right and walk for 150 m until you reach the end of the wide track (alt. 2,070 m).

(5) At the junction, take the path heading south-east, continue along the hairpin bends and reach the Refuge de la Glère (signposted).

(6) Continue southwards, overlooking Lac de la Glère and Lac de Coume Escure.

(7) At the crossroads, turn left towards the east, heading for Lac Det Mail.

(8) At the lake, turn right towards the south to reach its neighbours: Lac de la Manche, and the Lower and Upper Estelat Lakes. After these lakes, the path is not very well marked in places, so keep a close eye out for the cairns. Continue due south, following a small stream to its source.

(9) Upper Lake Estelat. Continue southwards towards the Col de Coume Estrète. The ascent is over scree, so watch out for loose stones, but it’s not dangerous. You’ll reach the Col de Coume Estrète.

(10) Turn left onto the easy ridge path until you reach the junction for the return route (alt. 2,890 m).

(11) Continue the ascent along the ridge to the summit of the Turon de Néouvielle (elevation 3,035).

(12) From the summit, you can admire the lakes of Cap de Long, Bugarret and Couyela Det Mey, as well as all the surrounding peaks. Turn back along the ridge path to the previous junction.

(11) Turn right onto a path heading due north, descending to the Maniportet Lakes (Lac Glacé and Lac Bleu), remnants of an ancient glacier.

(13) Just after Lac Bleu, turn right, heading due east, along its southern shore, then follow the northern shore of the elongated Lac Vert along its left bank up to the 2626 m mark.

(14) Just after Lac Vert Allongé, turn right, heading due north, at the three-way junction to reach several small lakes and the southern shore of Lac det Mail.
It is possible to turn left; the two paths join at Lac de Mail.

(15) Turn right, heading due north, towards Lac de la Mourèle, then Lac de Mounicot.

(16) At the fork (alt. 2,110 m), turn right, heading due east, for a short detour to Lac d’Astazou.

(17) Turn back.

(16) Continue straight on, heading due west.

(18) At Lac de la Glère, turn right and cross the stream of the same name.

(19) At the southern tip of Lac de la Glère, carry on straight ahead due north, following the Ruisseau de la Glère. You’ll reach a fork in the path that you passed on the way there.

(4) Carry on to the left for 150 m until you reach the wide track suitable for vehicles.

(5) Follow this track downhill to the car park (S/E).

A superb circular walk, but very difficult, as is made very clear. After the Upper Estelat Lake, a gully opens up before us – a steep climb – which leads into a second one that you can’t see at the start, followed by a third gully! In this gully, you go from large stones to boulders, then to rocky outcrops, and finally to enormous boulders… so you’ve been warned… That said, it’s still very beautiful because the rock is strong and robust and looms over you with all its might…

Markings are visible up to the second couloir; after that, only cairns… this section is really gruelling and, above all, treacherous… To be avoided at all costs in damp or rainy weather!

BUT, it doesn’t stop there! Once at the top, a plateau offers a superb view of the three lakes through which our circular route will descend, and of the majestic valley on the other side… a magical encounter with a magnificent mouflon and its little family.
Finally, the climb up to the Turon: once again, large boulders, but compared to what we’ve just been through… it seems like a bit of a laugh

A superb view of the magnificent Lac de Cap de Long with its sublime azure blue colour…
The return route takes us past the lakes, but the descent isn’t any easier; it, too, consists largely of large boulders for a long stretch…
The scenery, however, was superb and well worth the effort...
We actually split this hike into two stages, as the day before we’d set off from Barège and, via La Glère, made our way to the Packe refuge before turning back to spend the night at the La Glère refuge…
Despite that, it still took us exactly 8 hours and 50 minutes, and we covered 16.28 km according to Visorando… it’s not the distance or the elevation gain that’s the hardest part here, but the sheer difficulty of the walk due to the terrain…

It’s important to realise that this hike isn’t for everyone, and that it’s a good idea to be accompanied when doing it because, although it isn’t really dangerous, it’s still very demanding, with sections that could lead to a risk of falls and other problems…
Visorando offers another version without the circular loop, which goes via the lakes and back, and is called the Pic de Néouvielle rather than the Turon... it’s up to you which one you choose...

An exceptionally beautiful hike in a stunning and unspoilt setting.
I spotted Iberian ibex, chamois and birds of prey along the way.
Up to the lake, there were no apparent difficulties apart from the elevation gain; then, after the last lake, there were large scree slopes to cross in a very rocky terrain.
As it was snow-covered at this time of year, I naturally used my ice axe and crampons, but I’d recommend doing this route when there’s no snow.
It’s a very long route; it took us the whole day, setting off very early and returning at night with headlamps, so I’d advise taking the necessary precautions.
For us, it was 28 km with a significant elevation gain, so good stamina is essential.
Before reaching the summit, follow the ridge, which I wouldn’t describe as exposed.

A rocky climb, with a path to be carved out amongst the rocks.
Magnificent scenery; we were lucky with the weather.

A long and very challenging hike; I had to turn back 150 metres (vertical ascent) from the summit as I was running out of time. The trail is very difficult to follow and, without careful attention, it would be impossible to navigate, both on the ascent and the descent. The time I lost trying to find the trail meant I didn’t make it to the summit. Otherwise, a magnificent series of lakes and a beautiful panorama. Best suited to well-trained enthusiasts of the mountains.
