The west coast of the island of Batz

This hike takes you along the west coast of the island of Batz, where tractors reign supreme! After a boat trip from the charming little town of Roscoff, you can discover sumptuous and varied landscapes, sometimes wild, sometimes more urbanised or agricultural. From the lighthouse, with its 200 steps to climb for the more courageous, you will have a breathtaking view of the entire island and Roscoff from a height of 40 metres. Bathed in a microclimate, the island is home to unusual vegetation.

Description of the walk

Boarding at the port of Roscoff for the Isle of Batz. At high tide, departure from Roscoff is from the port itself, otherwise you will have to walk 500 metres to take the boat at the end of the long promontory. Disembark 15 minutes later at the port of the Isle of Batz, where the hike begins (there is a tourist office near the landing stage.
(S/E) Walk along the port to the village church, which is visible in the distance.
From there, continue to the end of the port to take the path that runs along the coast. You will reach the cove of Fort René.

(1) Continue along the path following the coast. The path is marked in places with orange round signs indicating the direction to follow. The coast then becomes wilder, and you will reach the guardhouse.

(2) Continue on thePR® and go around the tip of the island, passing well beyond the large rock (visible from a distance).

(3) Walk for a few moments on the tarmac road and then rejoin the coastal path, which leads to a beautiful stone house with a turret.

(4) Walk around it and you will come back onto the tarmac road a few metres further on.
Follow this road and take the right-hand road at the junction. Shortly afterwards, you will see a wash house on the left near a small lake. Head towards this wash house and continue until you reach it.

(5) Walk along the left side of the lake to return to a tarmac road. Turn left and, a few metres further on, follow the road that climbs towards the lighthouse.

(6) Take the road back to the village. You will come to the first crossroads at Fort René cove.

(1) Follow the same route as on the way out to return to the harbour (S/E).

Notes

The Tourist Office is located near the pier.
If you plan to climb the 200 steps of the lighthouse, plan your hike according to its opening hours.
Watch out for tractors, there must be one for every inhabitant of the island!
You can have a barbecue picnic at Fort René cove. They are self-service at this location, which is rather nice!
If you just want to go around the island, it's a good 13 kilometres.
On the east side of the island, the renowned G. Delaselle Exotic Garden is full of exotic plants.

Worth a visit

(6) You can visit the lighthouse when it is open to the public.
The island benefits from a microclimate and the Gulf Stream, so you may come across palm trees and other plants that are unusual in Brittany.
Roscoff is one of Brittany's "Petites cités de caractères" (small towns of character), so be sure to stop at the village church. The interior is particularly interesting. Outside, there is an ossuary.
On the other side of Roscoff, the chapel on a hill, visible from afar, offers a beautiful view of Morlaix Bay.
A few kilometres away is Saint-Pol de Léon, where you can admire some beautiful monuments, including some lovely churches.

A pleasant hike that allows you to discover different landscapes on the island, particularly the north coast, which is less frequented by tourists.

Hello
We really enjoyed the trip. We took one of the first boats to the island.
We found our picnic at the 8à8 mini-market.
Then we did the entire circular loop suggested by Visorando.
The view from the top of the lighthouse is very beautiful.

A very beautiful hike to do in the morning, starting at 8:00 or 8:30 from the boat, because afterwards it gets far too crowded for the crossing.

In fact, you have to blend into the landscape and follow the marked paths, at random.
We started on the right as we got off the boat, heading towards the park (which we didn't visit because of the cost of the boat + this + that... we wanted to focus on visiting the lighthouse, which is a must-see).

We took our time over the course of a day, stopping to eat a delicious crepe after visiting the lighthouse. We explored the island, enjoyed its charm, chatted with the locals, visited the lighthouse...

The lighthouse tour is a must, very well explained and beautifully presented throughout the rooms.

A little extra: At stage 4, just at the fork in the road, on the right, admire the seaweed oven.
A very pleasant hike to discover the island.

A very beautiful hike with lovely scenery and a very varied route. The trail is easy to follow. The ages of the people taking part in this hike ranged from 40 to 71, and everyone was delighted with the walk.
