Hike to the Pyramide de Cassini and Grand Cap Gros, avoiding the noisy and unsightly Fiéraquet quarry.
Moderate hike with little elevation gain.

Description of the walk

Parking is available at the Siou Blanc shelter car park.

(S/E) Head south on theGR® 99 towards the forest road.

(1) Cross the forest road (barrier) and follow the markedGR®99trail.

(2) At the edge of the undergrowth, take the right-hand trail at the crossroads, still on theGR® 99. The markings are a little further on. Continue straight ahead, ignoring the paths on either side.

(3) At the cistern (not shown on the IGN map), leave theGR® which descends to the right and take the blue-marked trail on the left. Quickly leave the trail and turn left (blue markings) onto a slight incline. There is a beautiful view behind you of Mont Caume and the coast.

(4) At the high-voltage power lines, the sharp limestone pavement zone begins. The blue dotted trail alternates between undergrowth and sharp limestone pavement. The trail is well marked and there are cairns, but you must constantly keep the next marker in sight to stay on track.
Caution: there are dangerous hollows and crevasses to step over.

(5) Cassini pyramid at the foot of the antennas. Commemorative plaque on this stone pyramid.
Watch out for cables and other debris. Continue to the summit of Grand Cap, making a small detour to the right.

(6) The Grand Cap is more welcoming for a picnic than the pyramid: flat rocks and superb views. Retrace your steps a little and find a comfortable path on the right, marked in blue.
Caution: another more challenging path marked with blue dots descends into the valley. Do not take it. Follow a fairly wide path that descends into the forest, heading north-west.

(7) Leave the blue-marked path and follow a well-marked trail to the left towards the power lines. It crosses a spectacular, recently deforested rocky area. Further on, the trail becomes a logging road before reaching a forest road at the Mistral oak tree (sign).

(8) Cross the road and continue straight ahead on the track lined with recent forest clearings. Follow this track, which winds through several bends, and you will reach a fork after a descent.

(9) The track turns right: take the unmarked but clearly visible path that starts on the left. Further on, ignore a path on the right and continue to the junction with a large track.

(10) Turn right to reach the memorial to the Resistance fighters executed during the Second World War (700 m).

(11) Turn back to the previous junction.

(10) Turn right onto the wide track and, at the next crossroads (Les Jounces), turn left and rejoin the GR®99. Continue straight ahead on the GR® to the Siou Blanc shelter (S/E).

Notes

The hike is mainly on trails and paths that are not accessible by vehicle, with the exception of the last two kilometres.

Please note the comments below.
==> The section between (4) and (5) is tricky because crossing the sharp limestone pavement is sometimes difficult and the path is no longer visible on the rocks. Pay close attention to the markings and cairns. Avoid in wet weather.
==> Passage near numerous karstic caves, some more visible than others. They are often protected, but not all. Keep an eye on dogs.

Please note that the forest road leading to the Siou Blanc shelter is closed during the summer (dates vary, but generally from 15 June to 15 September).

A beautiful route with magnificent sea views over Toulon harbour, dominated by Mont Caume, and much more!
However, it is not recommended in strong winds due to the crossing of the sharp limestone pavement, which can be "arduous" for those who are easily frightened or lack balance...
To get to Grand Cap from the Cassini pyramid, descend to a small hut and turn right at the dark red mark. An unbeatable picnic spot!
Thank you for this route

Beautiful hike completed on 07/11/2023. The passage through the giant sharp limestone pavement (among the most beautiful in Provence) is a little tricky. You have to be careful and follow the blue markings closely.

A superb hike that I have done several times, with beautiful sections through the forest. The climb to the Cassini pyramid crosses giant sharp limestone pavement (among the most beautiful in Provence). You need to be careful, as some areas are tricky in this spot, and follow the blue markings closely. The panoramic view from the pyramid is well worth the detour. The return trip through the woods is a little disappointing due to deforestation. Finally, don't miss the old Mistral oak tree, a marvel of nature.

A very beautiful hike that can be enhanced by a short detour to a very rare impluvium. You need to descend 200 metres at the crossroads when you leave the GR.

Very beautiful route. Indeed, the cables strewn across the ground, left over from antenna masts, detract from the beauty of the site. The view at the cape is superb.

Hike done with GPS.
A very beautiful, varied hike with no difficulty. However, be careful on the sharp limestone pavement passages: you need to be sure-footed.
The Cassini pyramid is basically a slab topped with a large cairn (hence the pyramid shape!!!).
However, the old masts and cables from telecoms and other installations next to the pyramid have been left to rust in place. It's scandalous.
Very beautiful views of Sainte-Baume to the north and to the south of the Faron, Coudon and Caume mountains, the bay of Toulon, Cap Carqueiranne and the Giens peninsula.

A beautiful hike surrounded by nature with magnificent views in places (Mont Côme, the coast from La Ciotat to Hyères, Sainte Beaume, the Southern Alps).

Magnificent views of the Mediterranean coast and gentle slopes make this route accessible, except for the sharp limestone pavement section where you need to be very careful. Not suitable for young children! Apart from the sharp limestone pavement (white area on the map near the pyramid), the undergrowth makes this a pleasant walk when the sun is shining brightly.
