Puy de Dôme and Puy Pariou via the mule and goat trails

A magnificent hike to the summits of the iconic Puy-de-Dôme and Puy Pariou. This route, on very well-maintained paths, is mainly on flat ground and offers numerous panoramic views.
Warning! Immediate danger – Rock falls. Due to rock falls from the cliffs, the Chemin des Muletiers is STRICTLY closed until further notice by municipal decree of the commune of Orcines.

Description of the walk

Park at the top of the Panoramique des Dômes car park (Maison de Site), near the motorhome area.

(S/E) Take the Puy-de-Dôme road that follows the Panoramique des Dômes railway line.

(1) Before the barrier, turn left onto Chemin des Gouris. Keep heading south-west, cross the road and ignore the paths on either side.

(2) Turn right onto the widest path. When you reach the road at Col de Ceyssat, cross the car park to reach the start of the Chemin des Muletiers opposite, near the memorial to the Ardents.

(3) Turn right and follow this path to the summit of Puy-de-Dôme.

(4) Go around it on the left in a clockwise direction to admire the view (orientation tables).

(5) Descend from the summit, passing the ruins of the Temple of Mercury and down the steps. At the bottom, turn left onto the Chemin des Chèvres (tarmac road).

(6) Continue right on Chemin des Chèvres, leaving the road via the steps, following the GR®4 signs. You will reach a crossroads at a fountain at the edge of the woods.

(7) Continue on the GR®89 to the right (Chemin des Gravouses).

(8) At the crossroads, there are two options:
- For a shorter version, turn right and go straight ahead until you reach the crossroads you took at the start of the hike (1). Then turn left to return to the car park (S/E).
- To go to Pariou, as shown on the map, turn left onto Chemin des Gouris.

(9) At the next intersection, continue left.

(10) At the next intersection, follow a steep path to the left.

(11) At the foot of Puy Pariou, climb the stairs to the summit. Please note: in order to preserve the site, walking around the crater and descending into it are prohibited. Please follow the signs.

(12) Turn back to the junction with the Chemin des Gravouses.

(8) Continue straight ahead to join the Puy-de-Dôme road and the Panoramique des Dômes railway tracks.

(1) Turn left to return to the top of the car park (S/E).

Superb hike, easy to follow as it is well signposted. At point 7, you need to take an entrance 100 m to the right to get back on track. Obviously, you need to be prepared for the climbs up the Puy de Dôme and Puy Pariou (via a staircase). In terms of scenery, this is a real must-see.

Superb hike. Of course, very busy at Puy de Dôme.
Please note that we were unable to complete the section between (7) and (8), which was blocked at (7). We therefore took the Gravouses path on the right, which took us to point (12), (11) and (8) to reach Puy Pariou, then we resumed the normal route. (additional distance of approximately 4.5 km) Surely there is a more direct route on the left?
Despite the very changeable weather, we were able to enjoy the breathtaking views.
A beautiful hike not to be missed
