In Montrodeix, park in the hamlet’s square, where there is a fountain, drinking trough and washhouse.
(S/E) Head north-west past the bus shelter, then turn left onto the Chemin du Château Fort.
(1) At the junction with signposts, carry on straight ahead towards Manson (a detour to the left is possible to see the basalt columns). A little further on, at the Fork in the road, keep to the right. The path climbs through the forest.
(2) At the T-junction with a track, turn right. Further on, cross the road carefully and continue along the path opposite.
(3) Cross the D942 very carefully to take a path opposite, slightly to the left. After about a hundred metres, at the junction of four paths, turn right. You’ll come to a junction with three wide paths and signposts. Turn left towards Col de Ceyssat.
(4) At a large open space, ignore a path on the right. Your wide path narrows to a trail and climbs quite steeply to reach the Col de Ceyssat.
(5) Cross the road carefully and follow the signposted path opposite towards the Chemin des Muletiers. The path goes round a car park and leads to the memorial to the Maquis des Ardents. Leave the climb to the summit of the Puy de Dôme, the benches and the fountain (drinking water except in winter) on your right as you head towards the Col de Ceyssat signpost. Take the GR®4 to the right towards Cime de la Plaine. Shortly afterwards, you can take the bypass to go round a ravine that cuts across the path.
(6) At the signpost, ignore the path leading down to the left and carry on straight ahead towards Vulcania.
(7) At the fork in the road in a pasture area, carry on straight ahead on the GR®, still heading towards Vulcania. At the junction marked 1097 m, turn right towards Le Traversin. You will reach the GR® junction at a fountain (drinking water available except in winter).
(8) Continue straight on towards the Font de l’Arbre via the GR®89. This is the Chemin des Gravouses, which descends for some distance.
(9) At the junction with the signposts, turn left towards Maison de Site and continue downhill.
(10) At the four-way junction marked ‘Chemin des Gouris’, go straight on towards Font de l’Arbre, still on the GR®89. You’ll walk past a golf course on your left. At the corner of the golf course, at the four-way junction, continue straight on.
(11) Ignore a path on the right. Further on, go straight ahead as the path curves to the right and you will immediately reach the D942 at the entrance to Font de l’Arbre.
(12) Cross carefully and follow the Chemin de la Roche Pertuisade opposite. At the crossroads, go straight on, then at the ‘Chemin des Martinets’ street sign, turn right and you’ll immediately reach the main street in La Font de l’Arbre.
(13) Cross the street and take Rue des Combes opposite, signposted ‘La Font de l’Arbre – Rue des Combes’, towards Manson. You’ll cross over the Ruisseau de la Tiretaine, passing a fountain on your left. Immediately after, pass a square on your left (with a bakery and washhouse), then ignore Rue Blaise Pascal on your right.
(14) At the next junction, turn left onto Rue de la Tour. Ignore a street on your left, and at the T-junction, turn left. Keep to the right at the next junction and you’ll reach the Roman milestone topped with a cross and sheltered by a beautiful lime tree. Leave it on your left, then veer right to pass in front of the fountain, drinking trough and washhouse. Continue on to reach the Place de Montrodeix (S/E).
