From Clermont-Ferrand, head towards Orcines and park at the very top of the Panoramique des Dômes car park (Maison de Site), near the motorhome area.
(S/E) Take the Route du Puy-de-Dôme, which follows the tracks of the Panoramique des Dômes. You’ll reach a junction just before the barrier.
(1) Turn left onto the Chemin des Gouris. Keep to the right, heading south-west, at the first junction, then go straight ahead at the second. You will reach a third junction.
(2) Turn right onto the widest path until you reach the Route du Col de Ceyssat.
(3) Cross the car park to reach the start of the Chemin des Muletiers on the opposite side. Take it to the right and follow it to the summit of the Puy-de-Dôme.
(4) At the station, go round the summit to the left in a clockwise direction to admire the view. Head back down from the summit, passing the ruins of the Temple of Mercury.
(5) Then continue down the steps and take the road on the left; this is the start of the Chemin des Chèvres, which forms part of theGR®®4.
(6) Continue to the right on the Chemin des Chèvres (stairs). You’ll reach a fountain as you emerge from the woodland; keep heading straight ahead to reach it.
(7) Turn right onto the Chemin des Gravouses. Continue straight on atthe first junction, then take two hairpin bends. After thesecond, head straight on until you reach the Chemin des Gouris.
(8) Turn right onto it. Continue straight on along the wide path until you reach the junction with the Route du Puy-de-Dôme and the Panoramique des Dômes railway line, at the original crossroads.
(1) Head down to the left to return via the reverse route of the outward journey to the top of the car park (S/E).
