"Le mégalithe de Riens" walk in Mons

A family hike to discover Mons, the Oratory of Saint-Pierre and the Riens megalith. The Riens dolmen is located in the centre of a tumulus and housed collective tombs. The commune of Mons has several dolmens from the late Neolithic period, which bear witness to an important social group more than 4,000 years ago. The capstones of the Riens dolmen are missing; it housed collective tombs. One of them probably lies on the ground on the north side, the other has disappeared. The entrance to the chamber is very unusual, with an ogive shape not found anywhere else. Two other dolmens without capstones can be seen on the path leading to Escragnoles: the Colle dolmen and the Brainée dolmen.

(S/E) From Place Saint-Sébastien, walk past the town hall and along the square on the right. Cross the village from south to north, first turning left then right to reach Rue Jean Vadon. At the end, continue straight on Rue Pierre Porre until you reach the end.

(1) At the Plus loin Fontaines crossroads, take the second road on the right: Route de Callian (D56). Immediately turn left towards the Barriguetou neighbourhood.

(2) At the crossroads, take the road on the left (signposted "Sentiers des Mégalithes"). At letterbox No. 695, leave Chemin des Ferrages on your left, then another path. Further on, you will arrive at the Chapel and Oratory of Saint-Pierre.

(3) After the chapel, leave the marked path on your right (ignore the yellow cross). Continue for 70 metres along the small road and, on your right, a sign indicates the Riens dolmen, hidden 50 metres away in the vegetation. Take this path to reach the dolmen.
