"La Pierre du Coucou" walk in Bagnols-en-Forêt

Starting point: Bagnols-en-Forêt cemetery car park.

(S/E) From the car park, turn left onto the Petit Roc trail

(1) At the fork with the signpost, head right.

(2) At Col de la Pierre du Coucou, take the path on the right and follow it to the millstone quarry (steep climb). Continue to the Oppidum de la Forteresse crossroads.

(3) Turn right to reach the oppidum.

(4) Return to the crossroads via the same path.

(3) Turn right to continue along the path to the next crossroads, where you will see a sign for "Retour Aire Parking" (Return to car park).

(5) From this crossroads, turn right towards "Aire Parking" onto a downhill path that leads to the tarmac track to Bayonne.

(6) Follow it to the right.

(7) Before the first house, turn right onto the path with a barrier, which will take you to the starting car park. Please note: You will be riding over some rocky sections (S/E).

During the summer, check that the mountains are open before setting off on a hike.

First, you will discover a millstone quarry, some of which are still in place. You can also see the marks they left in the rocks. This site has been inhabited since the Bronze Age. The oppidum is a little further on. Throughout this trail, you will walk among pine trees, some of which are bizarrely twisted, and heather. In summer, you will be accompanied by the song of cicadas.

Tips and suggestions:

- Millstone: evidence of an ancient activity, you can admire unfinished millstones still attached to the rock.
- The Oppidum: Remains of a fortified town from the Celtic period.
- A breathtaking view of Mont Vinaigre and Fréjus.
