Walk in the Stauffen and Petit Ballon mountains

Walk, mountain bike or electric mountain bike ride in the Stauffen and Petit Ballon mountains. The proposed circuit includes sections on roads, forest paths and cycle paths. There are no major difficulties, except for a short but steep climb after the Col de Marbach, which may require you to dismount, and the steady but also fairly steep climb from Boenlesgrab to Strohberg.

Description of the route

Departure from the car park at the foot of the Route des Cinq Châteaux, near the agricultural college.

(S/E) Follow the Route des Cinq Châteaux, which passes near the former Saint-Gilles Priory, then the car park providing access to Pflixbourg.

(1) When the road makes a sharp left turn, go straight ahead along the forest path marked with a red triangle.

(2) Pass near the place known as Fontaine de la Dame, then turn left and continue until you reach a road.

(3) Turn left (Route des 5 Châteaux) and follow this road for about 1 kilometre until you reach a car park on the right.

(4) Leave the road on the right and take a path marked with a yellow rectangle crossed with white, which forms a loop. After two left turns, this path joins the GR® 532, marked with a yellow rectangle, which leads uphill to the Stauffen shelter.

(5) Follow the path opposite, marked with a red disc, and join the Col de Marbach.

(6) Continue straight ahead on the GR® 532, marked with a yellow rectangle, and continue straight on to Bildstoeckle.

(7) Continue to the right and, at the next three-way junction, keep left and reach Schrankenfels.

(8) Continue on the GR® to the Wolfsgrube Pass.

(9) Continue straight ahead to the place called Borne Jaune.

(10) Keep left and head for the Firstplan Pass.

(11) Take the wide, stony path from Boenlesgrab, GR® 532 marked with a yellow rectangle, to reach the inn and the pass of the same name.

(12) Walk past the inn on your right, then take the first path on the left, which leads up a fairly steep slope to the Strohberg farmhouse inn.

(13) Follow the path to reach the Col du Petit Ballon.

(14) Descend to the right along the road to the Auberge du Ried.

(15) Take the hairpin bend to the left, pass in front of the Auberge, then turn right onto the path. Stay on this unmarked path, which will take you to Braeschenberg.

(16) Go down the small road until you reach a path on the left, a few metres before Lerchenfeld.

(17) Take the path that turns sharply left to visit the bottom of the Oberbreitenbach valley.

(18) In Oberbreitenbach, turn right and head towards the Breitenbach-Haut-Rhin Town Hall.

(19) Turn right, then left onto Rue des Écoles. Continue along the cycle path at the bottom of the valley, which passes above the Luttenbach campsite, and head for Luttenbach Town Hall.

(20) Continue straight ahead until you reach the bridge over the Fecht.

(21) Ignore it and turn right to follow the Leymel cycle route which runs alongside a canal.

(22) After a descent, and before the Fecht bridge, turn right to follow the cycle route which continues along the railway line and passes in front of the Badischhof building.

(23) Continue on this route, which leads to Griesbach-au-Val. Join Rue de la Gare, go up it, then turn left onto Rue des Champs.

(24) Follow the cycle path on the left, which runs alongside the railway line.

(25) Cross the road leading to Soultzbach and follow the cycle path to the Aspach Forest House.

(26) Stay on this route, do not cross the D417, and head to the car park near the agricultural college (S/E).
