From Zimmerbach to Gaschney

The route takes us to Munster via the vineyards and the cycle path, then follows the River Fecht. The long climb to Gaschney (970 m) follows a forest track offering lovely views over the little Munster valley.
A path, which is quite stony in places, leads to Metzeral (Steinabrück).
The return journey follows the cycle path at the foot of the mountains.

Description of the route

Start from the Hohnack car park in Zimmerbach.

(S/E) On leaving the car park, take Rue des Vergers.

(1) After crossing Rue du Réservoir, turn left onto Rue du Pinot, which continues as a vineyard path that winds around the Geissbuehl and heads into the Rikental valley.

(2) When you reach the edge of the forest, take the path that climbs uphill and, once you’ve crossed the forest, continue through the vineyard until you reach Rue Saint-Sébastien de Walbach.

(3) Walk up this street, cross the square and head towards the church.

(4) Head down to the left along Rue de l’Église.

(5) After a few metres, turn right onto Rue du Muguet. This street then becomes a footpath.

(6) Before reaching the main road, turn right and then immediately left to reach the church at Wihr-au-Val via the vineyard path and Rue de Lattre de Tassigny.

(7) Walk down Rue de l’Église, cross Route de Gunsbach and follow Rue de la Gare until you reach the cycle route near the campsite.

(8) Follow this cycle route along Rue des Iris, then turn left onto Rue des Lilas and then Rue des Roses. Leave the village and join a road. Follow it to the right and turn left at the next junction.

(9) Turn right, then immediately left, and continue for a few metres past Rue de la Fecht to find a path branching off to the left.

(10) Turn left and follow the banks of the Fecht.

(11) At the crossroads, turn left, cross the bridge and leave Rue de Gare to follow the Fecht on the right.

(12) Cross Rue des Artisants (D417) and continue along the path which runs alongside the Fecht as far as the Munster campsite. Cross Parc de la Fecht and Parc Albert Schweitzer, passing behind the Hôtel de la Verte Vallée, and join the Grande Rue.

(13) Turn left onto it and head towards the roundabout.

(14) Turn left into Rue des Moines and then right into Rue du Bretzel. This street continues as the Chemin dit du Bretzel and, still climbing, leads to the Col du Sattel (738 m).

(15) From the pass, follow the path marked with red-white-red Red Rectangles to the right. Quickly ignore the next turn-off to the right and continue along the main track, ignoring the turn-offs to the right and left.

(16) At the three-way junction, take the left-hand branch, marked with red-white-red Red Rectangles.

(17) Pass the military cemetery and turn right.

(18) At the three-way junction, turn left and carry on to Gaschney.

(19) At the end of the car park, turn left and head down Route du Gaschney for about fifty metres, then turn right and follow the path signposted for the mountain bike route. At the Fork in the road, take the left-hand path and, a few metres further on, continue to the right. Pass the entrance to a house on your right and head to the next three-way junction (elevation 913).

(20) Leave the signposted mountain bike trail and continue down to the left to join the small tarmac forest road. Caution! This section is somewhat uneven.

(21) Turn right uphill, then left onto the Chemin du Sillacker, marked with a Red Triangle, and head down to Steinabrück.

(22) Head towards Metzeral on the left via Rue de l’Altenhof. At the junction with Rue de Muhlbach, turn left, then join the track and cycle route on the right.

(23) Before the railway line, take the cycle path and follow the railway line to Muhlbach-sur-Munster.

(24) Cross the railway line and turn immediately left onto Rue du Chemin de Fer. Cross the Fecht and continue along Rue du Sendenbach to Sendenbach. Carry on along Rue de Muhlbach to the roundabout in Breitenbach-Haut-Rhin.

(25) Turn right onto Grand Rue and, at the small square in front of the town hall (the building with a bell tower and a clock), turn left onto Rue des Écoles.

(26) At the three-way junction at the entrance to the woods, continue to the left. Carry on straight ahead until you reach the bridge over the Fecht in Luttenbach-près-Munster.

(27) Just before the bridge, turn right onto Chemin du Leymel. Follow this road to the small hamlet of Leymel, before the bridge over the Fecht. Follow this road to the junction with the Route d’Eschbach near the railway bridge.

(28) Just after the inverted Y-junction, take the path on the right between the buildings (sign: ‘No entry for any vehicles’).

(29) Follow Rue du Chemin de Fer, which runs alongside the railway line, and continue along Chemin du Schosswald to Griesbach-au-Val.

(30) At the junction with the main road (D10.4), continue straight ahead along Rue des Mésanges, then turn right onto Rue des Hirondelles and take the sharp left turn onto Rue des Champs. Follow the railway line without crossing it until you reach a junction marked by gas pipe marker no. 47 (a yellow post with a small roof).

(31) Turn 90° to the right and, at the edge of the forest, continue to the left. Cross the railway line, then follow the D417 to the right and take the first road on the left. Caution! There is heavy traffic.

(32) Take the small road on the left towards Zimmerbach (C6), cross the Fecht and then the D10, and take Rue de l’Église and Rue du Hohnack to reach the Hohnack car park (S/E).

Sorry, I only go mountain biking very rarely, so I only use your routes for walking. I hadn’t noticed the mountain biking symbol in the description. That explains it all. Thank you for your prompt response.

Hello, I recently received this hiking suggestion. I’ve done quite a bit of hiking in this area and I don’t understand how you can cover 46 km on foot, with a significant elevation gain, in 5 hours. Please could you check this?
