Walk in Nyon

A lovely route to explore the peaceful town of Nyon on the shores of Lake Geneva. You’ll wander the streets of the old walled town surrounding its castle. You’ll stay in touch with nature as you pass through the many parks that border the town. And of course, you’ll also enjoy the beautifully landscaped shores of Lake Geneva.

Description of the walk

This walk starts and ends at the Nyon jetty (CGM)

(S/E) From the jetty, heading south-west, walk along the lake to the Hôtel Real.

(1) Cross the Quai des Alpes, walk past the Hôtel Real to find yourself facing the entrance to the Duche car park. Take the path that crosses the Jardin de la Duche and leads to Nyon Castle

From the castle, walk back a few steps to the start of the Promenade des Vieilles Murailles. Walk beneath the ramparts to the Esplanade des Marronniers. Enjoy the superb view of Lake Geneva and the French Chablais at the foot of the Roman columns. At the end of the esplanade, head towards the entrance to the fortified town at the Porte Sainte-Marie.

(2) Turn right onto Rue du Prieuré, which continues as Rue du Vieux Marché, leading to Place du Château.

Walk past the castle on your right, turn left and then left again to follow the Grand Rue. Before the Porte Sainte-Marie, turn right, walk past the temple and then turn right again onto Rue du Collège. At the end of the street, turn left onto Rue de la Gare, then right to follow Rue Neuve. Leave the old town via Rue Saint-Jean until you reach the junction with Rue de la Colombière.

(3) Turn right towards the lake via Rue de la Colombière. Turn right towards a modern church, then cross the small courtyard and, after passing the modern church, turn right into the small courtyard to rejoin Ruelle des Moulins. Head towards the lake to rejoin Rue de la Colombière; follow it to the right for a few metres before turning left onto Rue de Rive. Return to Quai des Alpes.

(S/E) Heading north-east, follow the lake shore to the Grande Jetée, a great spot for a lunch break.

(4) Walk the full length of the jetty then return to the pier.

(S/E) Turn right onto Rue de la Rive, then left onto Rue de la Porcelaine. Go round the Roman amphitheatre, taking the path on the right to Chemin du Crozet. Then turn left to rejoin Rue Saint-Jean. Turn left onto it and return to the junction with Rue de la Colombière.

(3) Go straight on, then take the second street on the left, Rue Neuve. At the end of the street, turn right onto Rue de la Gare and continue to Nyon SBB-CFF station.

(5) Return to Rue de la Gare, turn right onto Rue de la Morâche to reach the Combe shopping centre, Place du Midi. Then take Chemin du Midi until you reach Rue de la Combe in front of the gate to Parc des Buis.

(6) Walk through this small park and you’ll reach the Sentier de la Combe, which you should follow to the left. At a playground, head up to the left to the Promenade d’Italie and continue to the right to reach the Route du Cordon. Walk about thirty metres to the right, then turn left into the magnificent Parc du Bourg de Rive.

Cross the park heading generally south-west until you emerge onto Quai Louis Bonnard near a roundabout. Cross at the pedestrian crossing, then turn right to reach the Village des Pêcheurs and then the Parc du Conservatoire. Follow the riverbank to Clémenty beach.
(7) Turn around and stay on the riverbank. Walk along Quai Bonnard on your left and don’t hesitate to take a short detour onto the sea wall opposite the Hôtel Réal to admire the French shore, against which Mont Blanc stands out in the distance. Head back towards the jetty, following the lakeside parallel to Quai des Alpes, to return to the starting point (S/E).

It's a popular route, but not necessarily for walkers, as it's a city route in a very touristy town.
I didn't follow the route to the letter because I already knew part of it. The part I did this time was a delight, as the city is so beautiful.
I recommend this route and this place.
As well as the visit to the château, where the entrance ticket gives access for one year to the other 2 museums in the town... worth discovering.
The honest restaurant "Les Brasseurs", in rue de la Gare, will allow you to discover local dishes, including the famous röstis.
You can cross the lake on a CGN shuttle from the charming village of Yvoire on the French coast.
The return ticket, which is a little expensive at €26, gives you a breathtaking view of the shores of Lake Geneva.
