Assy Plateau - Platé Refuge

First day of the hike.
A good, varied climb that will take you to the Désert de Platé, a rather exceptional protected site.

This walk is part of a multi-day hike: Le désert de Platé en boucle depuis le plateau d'Assy

Description of the walk

When you arrive at the Plateau d'Assy from Passy via the D43, you will come across a strange wooden structure. Continue along the same road for 100 metres towards Praz Coutant, Plaine Joux. On your left, you will find a car park with around ten spaces.

(S/E) The trail starts here, where there is a sign indicating that the Refuge de Platé is 3 hours and 50 minutes away. Set off northwards and follow the trail to a new sign (Platé 3h45) on a tarmac road.

(1) Follow this road, which slopes slightly downhill, and at the next bend, you will reach the start of the trail leading to Charbonnière.

(2) From here, begin a steep climb towards the hamlet of Charbonnière.

(3) Once on the forest track, turn right and cross the hamlet of Charbonnière.
A low stone table marks the point where you should leave the forest track coming from Praz Coutant and take the path on the left. Join the crossroads with the path coming from Praz Coutant.

(4) Continue climbing to the left on the path, which is well signposted. Examples: Le fond des Lanches 1490m - Les pierres Chaumières 1585m - Sous le rocher des Miots 1695m - Les circulaires 1865m - Les Égratz 1895m. Reach this last point.

(5) Continue climbing and, as you leave Les Égratz, you will see the Chalets de Platé. Follow the signs: Le Bout 2000m - Le Poyeu 2023m before reaching the Chalets de Platé.
Reach the refuge (blue shutters) after finding a slightly flatter section for the last hundred metres. This is the entrance to the Désert de Platé, a vast area sculpted by the action of runoff on limestone rock, forming a sharp limestone pavement or lapiaz, cracks that can reach several metres in depth (E).

Notes

There are no particular technical difficulties. All you need is good footwear and a good supply of water, as there is no possibility of replenishing your supplies. The climb is long and it can be hot.
What's more, if you haven't planned to spend the night at the refuge and don't have enough supplies, you'll have to get your wallet out to buy bottled water as there is no spring on the plateau. Please be understanding with the refuge warden, who has to supply drinking water by helicopter.
This hike should be done in dry weather given the steepness of the trail, and if you plan to return via the same route, the descent on wet ground can be particularly dangerous.

Worth a visit

The omnipresence of the Mont Blanc massif with its various peaks and summits will not escape your notice. Don't forget your binoculars.
If you set off early (recommended in high summer) and have regained some strength, before lunch at the refuge (Italian specialities) you can take a detour to the Col de Portette (often home to chamois, on your right below once you reach the pass), or the Grandes Platières (arrival point of the cable car from the Flaine resort), or the Tête de Monthieu, or the Tête des Lindars.

A beautiful climb, quite steep, but you're rewarded when you reach the top :-)
Crowded, but not too much... as the refuge was already closed at that time of year.
Alternative: to shorten the route, I set off from Praz Courant (small car park on a bend in the road leading to Plaine Joux). You can easily join the suggested route fairly quickly.

A very interesting route in good weather.
Impressive climb up the "chimney" but ultimately quite accessible if you take your time. An 8-year-old child climbed it on the same day as us . You can start from the Praz Coutant car park to reduce the elevation gain in the first section, and then do some interesting circular loops from the chalet in 2 or 3 hours - Col du Coloney or Col de Portette. We saw around 50 ibex in mid-September on the Col du Coloney circular loop. Exceptional.

A challenging hike due to the steep incline, but very interesting with information boards explaining the geology of the site and, of course, magnificent scenery. I recommend this route for very experienced walkers.
