Savoye Plain between Mions, Toussieu and Saint-Pierre-de-Chandieu

This circular loop, which isn’t very long, is well suited for beginners trying out mountain biking with children. There’s little elevation gain and the trails are easy. Most sections of road are quiet.

Description of the route

The route starts from the car park in front of the Mions Leisure Centre.

(S/E) Set off eastwards towards Toussieu along the stony path. Please note: there is a ‘Stop’ sign at the end of the long descent at the D147.

(1) Cross with care and continue straight on towards the south. Stay on the road running alongside the field on your right until you reach the D149 (Route de Givors).

(2) Cross the D149 with care. This road can be very busy at certain times. Carry on straight ahead to reach a dirt track running through a dense pine forest. Pass alongside a rainwater retention and infiltration basin.

(3) As you emerge from this shady patch of fir trees, take the path on the right. Carry on to the next junction, just past the gas installation.

(4) When you reach the road, turn right and continue to the next junction. Then turn due west and look for a grassy path on the right, a few metres after passing under a high-voltage power line.

(5) Follow this path, which heads north-west across the fields. Continue up to the entrance to Mions to rejoin the D149.
After crossing the D149, follow the cycle path which takes you into Mions.

(6) At the roundabout, keep right onto Rue de la Libération and turn right onto Rue des Aubépines.

(7) Follow this street uphill and, when you reach the top, at the left-hand bend, take the dirt track behind the gate. You’ll pass under the high-voltage power lines and go round the water tower on the right.

(8) At the horse stalls, take the grassy path on the right and head for the car park in front of the Mions leisure centre (S/E).

Hello,
At point 8, the farmer no longer wants us to cross his fields…
When you reach point 8, the solution is not to take the path on the right, but the road on the left (Chemin du Chatannay) towards the centre of the village of Mions; head back down to the château’s driveway, take a short detour to the left to see the château’s entrance, and then head back down the driveway to the stop sign at the bottom (turn left onto Rue du 8 Mai)... Continue along Allée du Château to the first junction and, at the corner of the Mariane house, take Rue Pasteur. Continue along Rue Pasteur, look to your left at Germaine’s garden, then take the little Chemin de la Garenne on the right which runs alongside a high wall (if you’ve reached Rue du Penon, this was the little path just before it) .. Follow it, passing two mobile phone masts, until you reach Route de Toussieu, which you take to the left to return to the car park at the Marcel Moirou Leisure Centre, where you’ll find your starting point...
Before passing the Maison Marianne on Allée du Château, you can turn left onto Rue de la Liberté, which will take you into the centre of Mions, where you can see the church with its magnificent glazed-tile bell tower and the town hall; walk past the market hall to reach the Maison Marianne and Rue Pasteur…
This adds an extra 2 to 3 km to the route…
Enjoy the walk, everyone...
Kind regards.
Dominique

WARNING WARNING: the ‘8’-shaped path is no longer passable. It is closed and, moreover, leads straight into ploughed fields, which, in wet weather, make it impossible to cross
After point 7, continue along the road, go past the white barrier, cross through the housing estate and rejoin Rue des Aubépines. Turn right and head downhill, following the sign for the leisure centre. A little further down, turn right onto Route de Toussieu towards the leisure centre. Take the road uphill and you’ll reach the car park after about 1 km. Including the detour, we’ve covered a distance of about 10 km

The walk was just what we were looking for: not too long and with no significant elevation gain.
The description was excellent. The scenery was a bit monotonous.
