Pique Rouge de Bassiès

A very beautiful hike that follows a ridge line and offers magnificent views of the entire massif. This is a hike with a significant elevation gain, reserved for experienced hikers.

Description of the walk

Park at the Coumebière car park.

(S/E) Take theGR®10(white and red markings) and walk a few hundred metres.

(1) Leave theGR® and turn right towards the south. Cross the Ruisseau de Lauze stream and then climb up through the forest to the Étang de Labant lake, passing by some old silver mines.

(2) Head west on a path that climbs through the forest to a pass (1,648 m).

(3) Turn left and follow a path for almost 2 km, which is initially flat but then climbs very steeply to Col de Las Fouzès, where you can enjoy a magnificent view of the Étangs de Bassiès lakes and the refuge.

(4) Follow the ridge line to the right (south) with a few jumps. Pass successively at Pic des Planes, then Col du Morech.

(5) Pass by a breach overlooking the Garbet valley, which offers a beautiful view of the valley. Continue on the same route, pass directly below Pic de Caumale and arrive at large granite boulders marking the start of the final ascent to the summit.

(6) Continue on the same route to reach the Pique Rouge de Bassiès.

(7) Enjoy the magnificent scenery across the entire mountain range, particularly Montcalm and Pique d'Estats. Follow the same route back down to return to the Coumebière car park.
(S/E).

Bring enough water for the round trip.
Some sections require good balance.
The hike can be difficult in foggy weather.
In case of problems, you can always descend to the Bassiès Refuge from (4).

Hike completed on Wednesday, 17 September. Few people on the route during the week.
The first part was fairly easy going, but things got a little more complicated during the last part of the climb: lots of large boulders and a significant elevation gain over the last 400 metres. I found the descent very difficult, but the view of the Bassiès lakes and the view from the top of the peak (unobstructed view of Montacalm, Valier and, on the other side, the Pic des 3 Seigneurs and Saint Barthélemy/Soularac) are well worth the effort. There is water fairly evenly distributed along the route so you can fill your filter bottle. It was very sunny in September

Hike done yesterday, Sunday 14 September, with my border collie. Quite a few people up to the Las Fouzès pass, then fewer afterwards.
We underestimated the hike and left the car park at 9:50 a.m., as we are usually faster than the times estimated on Visorando. In the end, the trail is not easy: lots of rocks, and it's really long between the pass and the peak. It took us 4 hours and 10 minutes to reach the peak. It's better to leave earlier (plus, the car park was full).
Otherwise, there are no technical difficulties (even for the dog), and the view from the top is very beautiful.

A superb hike, admittedly a little difficult at times, but nothing technical and with splendid views.

The fog accompanied us throughout the journey. When we arrived at the foot of the Pique Rouge de Bassies, the sun came out and we had a magnificent view from the summit of the Pique d'Estat, Montcalm and Certescan.

A very beautiful hike, quite long but not particularly difficult
lovely views from the Las Fouzès pass to the summit
Wildlife spotted (marmots, izards), path blocked by a very intimidating guard dog... situation resolved by the intervention of the shepherdess 😏
